History / OriginalityGot a question about 1982-1992 Camaro or Firebird history? Have a question about original parts, options, RPO codes, when something was available, or how to document your car? Those questions, answers, and much more!
I know this has been discussed and i did searches:
1- Picked up an 89 GTA and have been cleaning it up etc.
2- So far no RPO codes, removed carpet, checked seats (they may have been replaced with period correct GTA seats in nice condition), not in glove box, not in hatch compartments, not in spare tire wheel well. have not checked behind dash or on top of gas tank
3- Contacted PHS and they only cover up to 1986
4- Obtained from GM archives the document 'Ive attached (hope it is viewable)
5- color schemes vary in car such as rear seats belts are tan, but one looks like saddle or beech wood. The actual rear belts under the plastic are tan, but the the front seat belts are red underneath plastic covers? The interior plastics are sun faded as well
6- doing my best to match things up, etc.
7- The wrap around spoiler is toast with respect to the mounting points (have a fiberglass one)
8- The car is reddish with gold spoke wheels & the ground effects are newer (black)
Anyways like information, not looking to restore this to original per se, just want to understand what i got.
the car runs/drives, but has the first shift slip in the transmission.................
Any suggestions would be appreciated. This is my first Firebird, have been driving 3rd & 4th gen Camaros for last 20 years on the daily
with gratitude, thank you
Thanks. I should have mentioned that i tried that too, but they could not recognize my Vin #? Weird. I tried multiple times double checking numbers vs letters etc. Just Weird. Maybe it's worth another try since I got the car registered n Vin checked out in my state. Thanks again
1989 is about the earliest, unless the vehicle was an export, for records to be in Compnine's database for our ThirdGens. Most 1989 ThirdGens are not in their database.
You said you included the GM Archive document but it's not in your post. You have two of the same images of the car in your post.
Unfortunately, if the car is not an export and/or not in Compnine's database, you likely will never know all the RPO codes unless you do find the master buildsheet. Most buildsheets were removed/trashed so there is not a high chance of one being in the car.
That said, what exactly are you looking for? Most GTAs are fairly uniform.
just looking for codes for interior colors, want to confirm that i have the "regular" brakes off the top of my head, here are all the docs i got form archive
It's in miles. The odometer wasn't working so I swapped entire cluster. Found fog light switch n got em hooked up with new lights. There's lots of little things needed replaced or buttoned up. Looks like they spray painted carpet to hide damage? But having fun with this one. Happy holidays
Apparently, you want to understand exactly what your car had from the factory and simply know and understand the car. Try checking the vin search at https://carfast.express/en/vin_decoder. It will show factory options, color, and transmission, even for such old Firebirds. This can help you figure out which seats or belts were actually original. As for the transmission, slippage on the first shift is most often due to either the clutch or the synchronizers.
