History / OriginalityGot a question about 1982-1992 Camaro or Firebird history? Have a question about original parts, options, RPO codes, when something was available, or how to document your car? Those questions, answers, and much more!
I didn't actually know there where still paper build sheets put into 3rd gens until recently. I know with the second generation, they're more likely to be found in Van Nuys built cars over Norwood ones, usually having one on the gas tank, under the driver and passenger seats, under the back seat frames and rarely under the carpet, is that the same for the third gen?
It is a 1987 GTA, I have the console RPO sticker, the dealer invoice etc, but no buildsheet. I have had both of the front seats out of the car and have not seen anything under them, the back seats where out too, I had a little look under the carpet but didn't see anything either, I hope it wasn't in there because the car did get rained in once. Any other suggestions for where to look? The interior was completely out of the car at least once in it's life as it was converted to RHD at the end of the 80's.

There is no specific spot to find a buildsheet. Nor is there any guarantee of there being one in the car. While these cars did use multiple build sheets on the assembly line, understand that they were considered "trash" and often discarded at the plant or at the dealership.
Given your interior was removed for RHD conversion, as you stated, the buildsheet still being the car is even less likely.
Best location would probably be over the gas tank. That was usually the location for year & years. That is where the build sheet for my 1972 Buick GS was found.
When we had the gathering with the Norwood assembly line workers, the build sheet was one of the topics we wanted to discuss. That's when we got the information, direct from the workers, that the buildsheets were considered trash and it was largely up to the shift workers as to what happened to the sheets. We were told the trash boxes got filled with such paperwork.
Although a small sample size, I've owned 5 ThirdGens from Van Nuys. Four are 1988s and one is 1992. I've never found a buildsheet on the gas tank. While that has been one of the common spots where one has been found, there was no set spot.
Under the carpets is where I've found them. Usually not salvageable, but they were there. Sorta makes sense if they were trash ... leave them under carpet when you put them in.
I found mine under the carpet in the bottom of the cargo hold. Torn, partially folded, and water stained. Although I know it's not water, it's mouse pee, but it makes me feel better to say it's water.
On my '88 T/A I found a broadcast sheet stuffed behind the panel at the back of the cargo area by the trunk latch assembly. I looked for it briefly in some paperwork for the car but didn't see it. I may have left it behind the panel, I don't remember (this was about 25 years ago). It was in rough shape but as I recall it was the broadcast sheet for the interior. Someday when I get back to this car I'll take a peak to see if it's there. Hope this helps, Ron.
I have never found one in my '88 GTA but then I've never had the carpet out or the car apart in any way for repair, so that might account for the reason. Everyone
here is correct when they state it was a 50/50 chance...

I found mine in the same spot. Although it wasn’t the build sheet but rather the broadcast sheet. Same “water stains” 😏
out of the first two new third gen Camaros I bought (89 and 91), The build sheets and the sub assembly line sheets were just thrown inside the cars at Van Nuys. waiting for the cars to be prepped at the dealer where they were thrown out. luckily I snagged them before they were prepped. My '87 Norwood convertible I never found, and the interior was all out. My '82 Van Nuys pace car I found under the passenger seat ( but it did not match the VIN) and finally I found the sheet under the drivers seat on my Van Nuys '83 Z28. And never found one in my Van Nuys 1985 Trans Am

Not the build sheet but I also found in the lower trunk pan area under the carpet. Made a copy. PlaN TO PUT COPY BACK IN SAME PLACE AND KEEP ORIGIANL. 1986 iROC-Z
I found the trim sheet to my 88 Convertible tucked in the netting under the driver’s seat…
I laminated it because it was fragile old paper and came out in pieces as careful as I was with it…
I’ve heard it was random if a worker shoved a build sheet in a car during production…. I wouldn’t rip out your interior looking
Getting you invoice from the GM archive is pretty cool and you’ll get all the RPOs…. Then you can get a window sticker as well if you have the invoice or the build sheet

And interesting to see on your car ... the job number tag riveted on your rad support will have the 097802 number.
