I have a 92 Vert I got back in Feb that I am trying to get back into presentable shape. I had an electrical fire that melted the center console ( and freshly installed NEW dashboard GRR ) radio, hvac controls etc. I found a donor car that i pulled the entire dash out of and swapped it all out and is on track to becoming a car again. The issue is the cluster i had in the car originally didn't work, the cluster I bought with the dash doesn't work ( well the tach does but at idle it says i'm doing 6 grand ) and i don't know the year of the donor car I pulled the dash from. I do know it is the electrical panel style and not mechanical because the cluster plugs into two female plugs. The fuel gauge is accurate and the temp gauge seems to be as well.
I am sure someone here on the board has lived through this situation before and may be able to tell me what to look for to determine what i need.

You looking for just the speedo or a whole cluster? And we need to know what engine it's for to be able to match properly which may be the problem with your tach

 

I have the L03 code efi 305 and i am looking for the whole cluster so i can just unplug and replace

90-92 camaro tachs are almost always faulty. Read the simple fix in the electronics forum

Update ...

Got a cluster from a board member and installed it. Speedo still dead and the tach reads about 5000 rpm high. i believe the seller completely that this was a working unit when he removed it because this makes three clusters that all do very similar things. Speedo dead and tach way off. I understand (kinda) the tach fix but am wondering why it would be necessary. This tach worked fine in his car and registered real rpm's What is wrong with this car of mine that necessitates altering the resistance? What is responsible for sending the information TO the tach?

Secondly ... i am assuming there is a speedo sending unit? looking for input there also

I got a sending unit off Fleabay for like $25 and will get that installed after Bike week is over I am thinking this should resolve the speedo part but the tach is still a mystery. Perhaps my answer is in the jys???

LoL i'm a dork! I should have known that. To the best of my knowledge all of the cluesters I have gotten have come from v 8 cars. I have not gotten any from the junk yards around me Because the guy that owns the junk yard thinks these are filled with gold. I have gotten all of my clusers from private individuals

 

as long as you got a v8 cluster in there, you can do the tach fix like POCKET said. should be in the electronic section.

the sending unit def could be a problem for the speedo, if you get to a point where your not sure, you can come by here and we'll pull the one off the wifes vert. It is a known working unit.

 

I have the sending unit and will get it slapped in pretty quick. IF that does not work i may take you up on your offer Waiting on a dash pad and a few other parts and she will be road worthy once again!

 

What did you find out with your cluster? I am having the same problem, my speedo does not work and my tach pegs out.

I found out that i dont have as much time as i wish i did to play with my car!!! I just got my dash pad today so I will be working on the car this weekend. I will install the speedo sending unit and see if that fixes that issue. as for the tach ... still clueless but I would be since I haven't actually tried anything yet. When I do, i will certainly post up.

 

if you still need a new cluster of gauges i have one from a 1990 firebird formula 350 V8. i will be driving through lakeland this weekend. 50 dollars

 

hi hello i have a 1985 chevy camaro berlinetta every thing works ecept the electric speedo no dash lights the volts work oil presure works why doesnt my spodometer work or dash light this is the first care i ever had withall dital it orig had a 305 i think it was tbi but not sure now it has a target master /gm good wrench 350 chevy in it could you tell me what i can do with this promblem does it need the cluster head lights work blinkers work running lights work ty
