odometer quit working
hey all..
the odometer on my 91 quit on me.. but before it quit it wold read slow (3 miles for every 10) but now it froze up. the speedo still works fine though. could it be a cable or the odometer itself. i was thinking if it was the cable, the speedo wouldve quit as well.
thanks, cliff

That fix won't work on the 91 speedometer. It's electric, not cable driven. The teeth on the gears themselves are prolly broken off like mine were. It's easiest to just purchase a brand new speedometer or instrument cluster. I just purchased a factory sealed unit and installed the whole thing in about an hour or less.

If it's not electric, not without modification. Essentially, what we have is a full instrument cluster that has 2 electric connectors on the back, near the passenger side. Once it's unbolted from the car, the entire unit just slides out. The best comparison I can think of is say plugging in a new PCI card in your computer. There are no cables, wires or anything. Also, the GTA/Formula cluster will work flawlessly in a non GTA/Formula. Those just have the higher speedo/tach.

Well, you might want to make sure that the used replacement doesn't have the same problem as your original one. After 15 years, these things can be flaky at best when you buy a used one. I'm not sure what tells the unit the mileage, but there is a VSS attached to the tranny. Maybe that's defective?
I will say that when I replaced my old unit with a factory new sealed unit last month, it worked flawlessly, odometer and trip meter were broken on the old one. So if it's not something on the tranny, it could be the used unit it shot as well.
