B&M megashifter into an 85-92 TA

I've done a search and read the other threads...but there seems to be one issue that hasn't been cover, at least not that I've found...Obviously with an 85-92 TA you can't use the shift plate overlay that is supplied with the shifter. I've read of people moding their console to ocomodate it....but, could I just instal the shifter assembly and use my stock boot and shift plate? Would there be anything in the way? would it shift correctly? thanks guys

Re: B&M megashifter into an 85-92 TA

i put in the mega shifter into my 88 t/a and i just trimmed out the stock shift plate first with the dremmel. i would think that you could use the stock plate without cutting but you would have to make your own boot or mod yours. the boot attachment on the b&m is rectangle. my shift plate was covered perfect and looked good but my console was falling apart. i just ended up putting in a camaro one piece console in. i have pics of both if you would like to see them

Re: B&M megashifter into an 85-92 TA

ok. looks like I can do what I'm looking to do. one more question. I'm looking at buying a used one from a guy on the board. he says that he has to give it a bit of a tug to get it in and out of gears...does this sound uncommon? or maybe it just needs some grease?

Re: B&M megashifter into an 85-92 TA

when i got mine i bought it from summit and i ordered the 3ft. cable because i read on this site that the 5ft. one that it came with was really alot harder to get into and out of gear. i dont have much of a problem but it is new and a bit stiff. i personally think that it gives it a more manly feel. i dont think that it is to hard to shift though. my wife drives mine sometimes and she likes konwing that the tranny is definitely in gear.

Re: B&M megashifter into an 85-92 TA

J-Dezzy, i would very much like to keep my shift plate as is, without cutting it up. However, i LOVE The megashifter boot, so if you could some how get the shifter in place with your stock shiftplate unmodified, please post some pix.

Btw, are you buying Badman's shifter? If so, they are not quite the same.

Re: B&M megashifter into an 85-92 TA

BADMAN has a sale pending on his right now. So I'm looking at one from another guy too. both are the same price, so it's all in who can hook me up first...what do you mean that they aren't quite the same?

Jdezzy, i think Badmans shifter is a different style, or just really really old. It still works fine i think, but u may run into some probs when shopping for parts with his.

I ended up going with another one. BADMAN didn't get back to me fast enough on weather he sold it already or not so I picked one up form another guy.
