How bad are this tears in the floorpan?

I took up the carpet in my '83, found these. I don't have access to any welding equipment, what are my options? Should I rent a welder and patch them up?

The first one is on the passenger side near the door, the second is on the tranny tunnel just below the shifter cutout.

if not welded, what about that epoxy clay?

sand down the rust, treat it with the no-rust spray, apply the epoxy clay, and then sand that down?

I would probably want to weld, but this might be the cheaper fix.

I did some MIG welding in shop in highschool, I built a grate rated at a couple of tons. I'd practice on old lawn furniture or some scrap before I get near my car, or is this something a newbie welder should stay totally away from?

It's just a floorpan, I wouldn't be too concerned if you have past welding experience.

If you wanted a cheap way to do it like that then i would use fiberglass mat
and POR-15

Re: How bad are this tears in the floorpan?

I broke down and bought a cheap ($200) mig welder. It's not the first time I really wished I had one and I already have several fab projects that I plan to use it on. I was more concerned that one of them, particularly the one in the tranny tunnel, might need more work to keep proper structural integrity.

i just pulled up the carpet in my 91 rs and the ttops had been leaking, my floorpan was in a bit worse condition then yours, since you bought a welder i would weld it up and then invest in por-15 floorpan kit, it works great and will prevent further rust and will stop rust in other spots, just check it out and por15.com let me know what u think

POR-15 is like rusts arch nemesis in a can. That stuff is wonderful. Best part is, after you brush it on, it levels itself very well and looks like powdercoat after it cures. Not that anyone is going to look under your carpet...but you'll know it looks good haha

Will that stuff work okay on frames too? I'll be using Hy-tech's ceramic stuff on the inside after I treat the worst spots but I'd like put something on the underside to avoid future rust problems.
