Re: SeatBelt Recall

The old buttons tend to turn from red to pink and brittle. Often due to or excellerated by exposure to the sun (UV rays). This can cause them to break and fail. As 82 Iron Duke said, the recall replaces them. Better to get new replacement parts than risk installing used ones. It can be a serious safety concern.

Re: SeatBelt Recall

lets see if this works.

the black buckle on the right is like the original that the car came with. the grey buckle on the left looks like a modification. is this the recall for the buckles?

Re: SeatBelt Recall

It's the original recall. They later changed the recall to replace the entire assembly. The recall is still active, so if you can, try to get the local dealer to replace it. They'll probably give you some bull about how it's already been done to that car (the original recall only added the metal system if the button looked like it had failed, if not, they checked it off the list of cars and left it as is) then you'll need to talk to the dealership owner, and then probably GM, but you can get them changed. Takes a lotta work, but they're 100% new, free, and you get to stick it to your local dealer.

Re: SeatBelt Recall

I had mine done a few years back. Here's is my copy of the original Dealer receipt with the campain #'s of the original recall and the part #'s. This should give you an idea and help you out. Print it out and take it with you to the dealer for proof about it and that it's free.

(PS; also notice there's a recall for convertible owners regarding the front latches.)

Good luck.

Re: SeatBelt Recall

They might. It depends. Dealers hate recall work. They don't make money on it, so they'll find any reason they can to say no.

What's this about fixing the driveshaft though?

Re: SeatBelt Recall

not that easy, the dealers are over worked and don't want to deal with you. you have to prove that it's never been done or tampered with. a real pain!! i didn't feel like dealing with it.

That was an unrelated problem, but one prone to many 3rd gen Camaros (no recall, just a deficiency). Quite a few 3rd gens have a reputation of rear vibration as you approach or slightly exceed highway speeds. After I bought the car (I'm the 2nd owner) in the spring of 2000, I had the complete suspension, tires, wheels, etc, inspected and balanced. This did not reduce the vibration at all. It was then determined I had one of the out of balance driveshafts. I had it sent away and rebalanced. Now my ride has absolutely zero vibration and is smooth at any speed. Like a rocket-sled on rails!

Re: SeatBelt Recall

Yea, I know what that's about, I was just confirming that there wasn't a recall (new u-joints caused me to have the same vibrations) on the situation.

I brought my car to the dealer for a fuel problem, and all they did was charge me a total of 60$ for 4 hours, and the use of several machines.

Re: SeatBelt Recall

The local balancing shop here wanted $60 to balance the thing. My rear is going out though, and I'd need a shorter shaft with the rear I'll be installing, so I didn't have it balanced. Just can't drive 80.

Re: SeatBelt Recall

maaaaaan i need to do a write up on U joint replacement. there is more to it than popping in a set of joints and going. if the joint or yoke has any "hang" when you move it with your hand your gonna get "run out" as its called in the shops. also i have found diff companys like to use diff size thickness of clips and this can cause binding and this will cause MAJOR run out.
there are a few tips and tricks i have found that make for a well working drive shaft.

as for the topic, i havent paid much attn to my seat belts to see if they were serviced. probably be a bunch of hassle with no results at the dealerships around here.

The cost is listed on my receipt pictured above. But note; this was is 2000 (7 years ago) and in Canadian $$$. If you feel you may need this done, just give your local shops a call for a quote.

It depends on a few factors . . .
- how bad is the shaking?
- where is it coming from? (There can be many sources. And each source puts a different kind of stress on whatever mechanical parts it's related too.)

I'd start with determining what is the cause. Through the process of elimination (tire balance, u-joints, etc) starting with the cheapest and most common causes and working up from there.
Any vibration or shaking can not be good. And it would probably be just a matter of time before it can cause premature wear on parts. Or at worst , possible control and safety at higher speeds.

PS; this is getting off the subject (seat belt recall) and probably deserves it's own topic.
