HVAC problem

all4u's post and the cooler weather has reminded me that my heater doesn't exactly work anymore. whenever i turn on the heat, air, defrost, etc it likes to make a loud shrieking noise similar to that of a loose belt or a party kazoo. It started probably over 6 months ago and would only do it for a second or so but it got progressively worse over time to the point that as soon as I turn on the air it makes the noise, no matter what speed or setting. When it makes the noise the heat/air stops blowing rendering my heater useless. It is very loud and you can hear it from both outside and inside the car in the area of the heater box. I should probably add that I have removed the A/C pump and hoses but still have the stock heater box. I know nothing about the HVAC system so any help would be much appreciated.
