That has happened to me many times in my 11 years of owning my 3rd gen camaro- its a quirky thing with these hatches. Believe it or not if you give it a good slam- it will catch. The thing is that sometimes the electric motor doesn't engage correctly when lifting the hatch- especially if your hatch struts are shot.

The other option is to remove the back plastic cover, then remove the motor from the hatch mechanism. Insert a small screwdriver into the opening created by removing the hatch motor and turn the gear wheel to raise the "catch" for the "hook" for the hatch lid. Raise it until the "catch" is high enough to engage. Your back deck will sit a little higher but it will catch and lock.

Before you start slamming the latch, read the answer I posted in your other thread in the "Body" section.

Oh, what the heck. Go ahead and slam it. I could use the business. lol

Re: HELP!!! HATCH WONT LATCH 88 IROC

when mine broke I used 3 pairs of vice crips to hold it down it worked good, while I waited for my repair kit from TDS to come in I would suggest getting it best money Ive spent in a long time I dont think ill ever have to worry about repairing it again

Spoken like a true prophet, I close my hatch with the gentle touch only a mother knows and she is still working like new after 19 years I also make sure the contact plate is kept clean, the motor stays clean, and the hatch struts work, and ounce of prevention is what I heard

Re: HELP!!! HATCH WONT LATCH 88 IROC

I'll share a bit of information. The contact plate has nothing whatsoever to do with the pull-down unit. It powers the rear wiper on early F-bodies and the HMSL (high-mount stop light) on the later cars. When the HMSL moved to the top of the rear hatch in model year 1991 it dissapeared.

I agree with gta50.You need to remve the motor, then raise the unit up a little. You might only need a new reversing relay, instead of new hatch motor.John
