has anyone repaired their own seatbelts?

I am sure this has ben discussed on here before but when i searched i looked through litteraly hundreds of posts about the recalls and dealing with the dealership...

I found a gm repair kit on Ebay for under $20 bucks and figured this may be easier than dealing with the dealership.

if anyone has performed this repair please post a link with some how to info so i can decide if i should perform this myself or spend the big bucks for new receivers. I read on here the few dealerships that actually honored the recall just replaced the old receivers with new black ones and i have grey interior. I would like to keep it that way.

Thanks in advance.

Re: has anyone repaired their own seatbelts?

I bought one of those GM "repair kits" and it went fine for me with a simple flat tip screwdriver.......way to easy to do. Just a matter of installing the metal support and popping out the old buttons.

I say go for it

Get the kit and do it yourself. Kit comes with small metal tool to replace buttons. Easy to do ,just follow directions. Buttons came in red color.

The kit has four red buttons, four springs, and four metal clips. I don't see any tool in there.

No tool included. You just insert a screwdriver and pry until the button pops out.

Re: has anyone repaired their own seatbelts?

This is a little off topic, but have any of you tried cleaning your seatbelts (the actual belt part)? Mine look kinda nasty but I have no idea what to clean them with.

Re: has anyone repaired their own seatbelts?

cool, i will try tomorrow. Thanks,
As for cleaning them, you can use simple green on any interior cloth and it works great. just make sure it is diluted to the right mix or you could end up with a bleached effect.

Re: has anyone repaired their own seatbelts?

I bought the kit but went to the local PIC-N-PUL yard to practice. I wasn't too successful in getting the little red button off without doing some kind of damage. I think I got one of four off without a problem.
----------
What I think I'm going to do, since these are a recall item anyways, is take the kit and car to my dealer and have them install it. Shouldn't take them but a few minutes.

Re: has anyone repaired their own seatbelts?

Ive done this many times as I find good buckles all the time at the junkyards.I get my pushbutton kits from GM.It takes alittle patience and some finessing.I can now do a set in less than 5 minutes now.I use a small flat bladed screwdriver.First thing I do is install the metal bumper. This gives you a firm surface to lean against with the screwdriver while prying out the red button. If you try it without the metal bumper installed you might snap off part of the lower lip.Take it from experience the plastic does get brittle from the sun.Second step is to pry out the red button.Sometimes the old buttons just break in pieces due to being so old and brittle but if not then you place the screwdriver underneath one side under the button and pry it out.You might experience that only one side of the button will pop at a time and then pop back when you try the other side.In this case use a second screwdriver to pop the other side of the button while you still have the first screwdriver in place holding the opposite side.Once the button is removed you will see the spring.Take the old one out and install the new one.The tricky part is getting the new button to snap back into place. On the backside of the button there are 2 clips that attach to the black plastic piece that holds the spring in place. Also on the button there are 2 small rails and a lip on the top of the button. That lip must be fitted to the top of that same black plastic piece. This is the hard part.Align the 2 rails on the back of the button against the recepticals on the black plastic piece and try to push it straight back. Most likely it wont work on the first try.My trick is to use a very thin flat blade screwdriver.Stick it into the top of the buckle and pry down on the black plastic piece while I push the button into place. This allows the upper lip to mesh up and will also allow the button to slide back far enough to snap into place.Good luck

Re: has anyone repaired their own seatbelts?

Did this last week. All my seatbelts look 100% new and work better than new. The first one took me 30 mins because i was figuring it out. The next 3 took 5 mins less everytime (approximately). I even did the back seat ones while they were in the car but the front i had unbolted from the car to make it easier.
1) take flathead screw driver and pry out red button (be careful not to ruin the plastic of the actual receiver)
2) take out spring by liftin the peice that sits on it and then pullin the spring out
3) lift that peice again with one finger and place the new spring on those two ball shaped metal supports and then align the springs so that the spring is on the track. (sounds cimplicated but once you do it it's simple, just tricky to get ur fingers in there while holding the peice up).
4) Place the shiny new button on the appropriate place and press it down as far as posible so it clicks in place.
5) put the metal guard (chrome peice) on the buckle and click it in place (make sure it clicks in place and doesn't fall off)

That's it. Quick and easy fix that will make your seatbelt receivers better than new!

Later,
-Marc

Re: has anyone repaired their own seatbelts?

While we are on the topic of seat belts; how the heck do you get them unbolted from the floor and ceiling!! Maybe it's just from sitting for so long, but they are torqued down tight. Tried removing the passenger side, thought I was gonna rip my rocker panel off. I plan to remove mine completely and go with aftermarket belts. Also gotta figure out how to modify my door sill plates to get rid of the hole for the floor mounting point of the seat belt.

get a 12inch black iron pipe slip it over your breaker bar( use breaker bar so you dont damage your ratchet.) and use that for leverage thats what i did
