Mice in interior...AGAIN!!!!

ok so they are in there again. I actually saw one run across my back seat so what im asking i guess is

1. What is a good way to catch the bastard without using a conventional mouse trap?
2. Where are the common areas where mice can get into the car? 1987 camaro
3. How do I keep them out? the car is in a carport so there must be something i can do.
4. Smell is still slightly there from the last time they were in there. Whats a something good to get rid of the smell? i have cleaned it up but on a nice humid rainy day when i cant roll down my windows is the only time its there and its the most inconvenient.

Thanks in advanced. If you can answer any of the above questions that would be great thanks

Re: Mice in interior...AGAIN!!!!

With 30 years of owning cars, mice is one thing I have never worried about. The car interior is only so big. Time to pull all the seats and find out where they are living. Go to a pet store while you have seats out and get an emzine cleaner. Unless there are going thru the door with you, there is a way in, fix it. Spray seats with emzine cleaner and start steam cleaning carpet and last seats. If all fail, the atom smasher fires up in August, so you should have to worry about it that much longer! They do say the black holes it creates will be small! They hope!

Re: Mice in interior...AGAIN!!!!

Been having some mice problems here at home as well. What does the trick every time is plain old peanut butter and a mouse trap. Works everytime, they can't resist it.

Re: Mice in interior...AGAIN!!!!

alright thanks. Ill have to wait till another day because its raining but ill do that tomorrow if i can. last time they were in my car they were hiding behind the trim in the hatch so it should be a fairly easy fix i hope. I still gotta yank the lower drivers side vent and clean the hell out of it MORE because they were crapping in that too. The car was FLAWLESS until those little shatheads got in

Re: Mice in interior...AGAIN!!!!

Why not just do the easy thing that everybody else does and throw a few sheets of fabric softener in the car. Throw a couple in the hatch, the back seats and under the front seats.

Mice cannot stand the sent of the fabric sheets. It drives them absolutely insane. Make it a common practice to keep a few in there from now on. It will keep other creatures out as well.

Re: Mice in interior...AGAIN!!!!

For the smell, check and see if you can find any dead ones. Check under the back seats - pull them out. Under the front seats. Check under the hood. Also, check the trunk behind all the panels. I detail cars on the side and recently a buddy had the same problem. I found 4 dead mice in his camaro.
Those little pests will get anywhere where there's a little crack or hole.
In the winter I put moth ***** all around and inside my 'vert to keep them out. Hope this helps. Rick

Re: Mice in interior...AGAIN!!!!

Throw the neighbours cat in your car and keep it in there. After about a month all the mice will be gone!

No . . . maybe not . . . I think there might be something inhumane about that!
And besides, even worse, you might find your entire interior ripped to shreds!!!

Re: Mice in interior...AGAIN!!!!

In my project car I put a box of moth ***** in there and don have one problem. It also helps with mold and humidity. NO Joke it works great. Every couple months I need to put a new box in it though.

Re: Mice in interior...AGAIN!!!!

I vote pulling the interior, cleaning it really well, shampooing the carpets, then using some sort of repellant. The LAST thing you want to do is put stuff in there designed to attract them, then let them crawl somewhere todie.

I found a total of 4 dead young mice so far in my 86. Two of them got caught up in the auto shifter mechanism when i pulled it into gear. yeah... Cut them in half. Gross as crap.

So Ive been airing it out, and I plan to pull the remaining carpet and panels out to look for me.

Im going to look into the dryer sheet thing... If that really works, Ill def put some in there. a) they smell great. in fact its my favorite air freshener scent and b) if it keeps the mice out...GREAT!!!

Re: Mice in interior...AGAIN!!!!

If it's a hardtop, they are most likely getting in through the AC system (outer box, bottom side in the engine bay)......

I've been lucky so far, but I've worked on a few of these cars that had mice problems and that's how they came in.

Take out your A/C blower fan (from engine bay side) and look inside the AC box, see if you see droppings or a nest.

I have also heard that mothballs work like a charm as well. I have read that mice cannot stand the scent of them either.

Re: Mice in interior...AGAIN!!!!

We had a big problem with mice. They kept getting into my T/A, and we could not find the hole, so it was probably the air intake for the A/C like everyone else says. Since we live up in the mountains back up in the woods, we get a constant fresh supply of mice and rats. Four years ago we adopted a cat. It's favorite place to sleep is on top of the T/A... It's amazing what that cat can catch. The wife liked the first cat so well, so we got two more. I don't think that there is a single living small creature of any kind within a 1/2 mile of my house! Talk about mass extermination. No signs of mice now. Off course I have cat tracks all over everything! Just a thought. And the car still stinks.

Re: Mice in interior...AGAIN!!!!

This problem with the mice thing must be for you non-subtropical people. I only hear about this problem in the northern southern states, midwest, and northeast.

On top of the fact that because of the road salt, your cars rust much faster then ours. I guess there are some advantages of living in the 90* heat and 100% humidity afterall!

Re: Mice in interior...AGAIN!!!!

I second the dryer sheets... granted I don't like how they stink up the car, but it's better than mouse ****.

As for the peanut butter and a mouse trap, we find that crickets and other bugs eat it off faster than the mice, not to mention mice would lick it off. Try some baccon tied on with thread (not in the car of course). Takes them a while to chew on. Gets em every time and lasts quite a while.

Re: Mice in interior...AGAIN!!!!

I found once in my shifter and another on top of my headliner!! Good and dried out. Must have climbed up the A pillar or something. Anyways the best thing to do us pull the whole interior, clean the hell out of it, and use dryer sheets behind the panels/dash/carpet.

Re: Mice in interior...AGAIN!!!!

Mothballs.

I have a carport and it is the only thing that gets rid of them. When I store the car, I put some on the ground around the car, some on the floor matts, then some on the heat/ac inlet near the wipers, then turn on the heat to draw the fumes into the ducting. Throw a few around the airboax and in the engine bay, and you are set.

I have never had mice get into my car doing this method. Before I started this, mice were a constant problem with my other car.

Re: Mice in interior...AGAIN!!!!

In my old 82 camaro I had a really bad mouse problem. The car sat in the driveway from october till april. When I pulled the cover off it and got in I noticed some tree debris on the drivers side floor. As I was cleaning it up more kept appearing. It was coming from the plastic panel under the steering column.I pulled that off and there was piles of the stuff under there.Cleaned all that up and had the same exact thing on the passengers side.Cleaned that up and then noticed inside the console was filled to the top with the stuff.Pulled the shift plate off and it was right up to the top.It took a while to get it all out of there and then I had the really strong urine smell when it was hot out.Luckily I ended up selling the car not too long after that

They do, but most humans can't stand the smell of them either. Taking a car out of storage that has used mothballs (both the older naphthalene type or the newer dicholaparabenzene) in the interior have an absolutlely horrible odour that can linger and be very difficult to get rid of. Some say it smells like old people because they used to add mothballs to their clothes drawers, chests and closets to keep the moths & mince away.

Those who grew-up in the country probably had fun with mothballs by making backyard napathane charges! N apathane Charges

Re: Mice in interior...AGAIN!!!!

do it right the first time... pull the seats (10 min job), panels (10 min) and hopefully you will see rust (bondo) where they are getting in... check your rear fender wells for rust, the most common one is pass side @ spare tire... possibly through your firewall @ pass side. there is also a common rust hole @ driver side foot rest area... pull the carpet up and see. at night i can see a light come into the car from that area.

Re: Mice in interior...AGAIN!!!!

Every "fix" I have ever heard has a story of it not working.
I know someone who was told Irish Spring soap shavings work. They ate it and puked nasty stuff all over his billet aluminum trim in the engine.
I think it's dumb luck to be honest.
My IROC... 2 winters in a row the little bastards got in and trashed everything. I ended up gutting the entire interior to the firewall. ALL the HVAC ducting was removed and disinfected with Clorox. The carpet and underpadding were thrown out. Once that underpad gets damp/mouse peed on the smell NEVER goes away.
Last winter it stayed in the garage.
The convertable was outside all winter, as well as my old floor rusted out K10 which hasn't moved in over a year. Neither one of those had any mice and both are far easier to get into.

Re: Mice in interior...AGAIN!!!!

They're evil little *******s.

$50,000 combine parked in a shed all winter. Probably around 200# of residual grain in all the cracks, crevices, holes, auger troughs, and other cleaning inaccessible places on that machine. 200# of grain. At least. Damn rodents would rather eat the insulation off the wires

Crush them, as swiftly as you can, with as much force as you can bring to bear.
Traps. Poison. Hammers. Shotguns. Gasoline. Stop at nothing, this is war.

Get a pet snake. Keep it in the car. Just the odor of the snake will keep the mice out.

Wow I didn't realize mice liked living in cars that much. Worst thing I ever found in mine since I lived here was a scorpion, but it was easy to catch, and didn't shat everywhere. I'm moving back to Ny so I'm gonna try dryer sheets and mothballs when I get there.

Re: Mice in interior...AGAIN!!!!

if you use dryer sheets, do not use the cheap dollar store ones, they didnt work for me. in fact they ate them use downy or any of the better brands... i cant explain it. good ones do work though, change them once in a while. check wheel wells, especially the rear ones if you have any rust on the body. my old 84 had 2 holes in both wheel wells i filled in with great stuff....

Yup. No mice problems here in Florida, just like out west. Ants is a different story.

This one really pissed me off too. I unfortunately don't have a garage so I leave my C5 covered during the week and take the cover off for the weekends when I use it. Well, since it's been raining non-stop for a month, I guess the ants felt that the car was an excellent place to seek shelter from the water. At least it only took three days to get rid of the last remaining ant. Killed most of them day one. Put some Terro ant poison which is like pure sugar to ants on the tires. Even though it won't kill regular ants, they are attracted to it because it's sweet. Had a bunch congregating on my tires enjoying there feast then I backed out of the driveway........85% DEAD.

The other remaining 15% took two days to flush out. But hey, at least they don't ruin your interior like mice. Never had a mice problem inside my thirdgen but sometimes lizards get in there. Lizards don't really do anything other then leave little s#!ts so they are no harm. My favorite when the car sits around too long.....wasp and/or hornets nests. They love building these damn things in between the door and the fender, behind the taillights, under the wheel wells, etc. Those motherf@(kers are nasty. Just imagine a nice day outside and you say "hey, I think today I'll finish putting in those new tie rods." You jack up your car, get to work and after about 20 you slip and bang your wrench on ANY metal part..........that ping alone makes you have to run for your life when a couple of really pissed off hornets come your way in a hurry.

Re: Mice in interior...AGAIN!!!!

.... Chemical Warfare

Go and get a raid bomb and open the doors and put a tarp over them so the litte suckers have a place to run and just put 1-2 raid bombs in there and set them off and go have a beer. If they are still there they will be dead then track them by smell but I have run snakes and rats out of a house with 1 bomb so 1-2 in a car will have a mustard gass effect on them. When I lived in north GA we had horrible mice and rat problems during the winter and I tried traps of all kinds and found that brute force and chemical were the only way to run them out or kill them but the rats took cunning and a Co2 pellet gun to get rid of. I hate rodents and pest so I have no problem killing them by any means be it trap or bare hands they deserve to die.

Trespassing rodents should be terminated with extreme prejudice.

I had a live mouse caught in a trap (back foot). I put him in an empty peanut butter jar, and drilled two holes in the lid. I put a cigarette in one hole, a straw in the other, and sucked the smoke through the jar...just to see what effect it has. That mouse...shall we say, ended quickly, and my kitty kat got a serving of smoked mouse for dinner.

Re: Mice in interior...AGAIN!!!!

The mice got into my car in an air conditioned and heated garage. The car has no rust or other holes. It has always been a garage queen, and never a daily driver, so there must be other places for them to get it. My mechanic says that the fresh air door opens when the vaccum leaks down while the car is parked. He says that the car is so old, that it will be impossible to find all of the vaccum leaks. I still think the cat thing is the way to go. No smell, the kitty's clean up most of the mess, and it's great entertainment to watch the cats play with the mouse for a while before killing it! I like to think that it's environmentally responsible because there are no chemicals involved. Just grab a can of beer, sit back and enjoy. It's better than watching the bug zapper!
