Tach gauge, incorrect readout, please advise

I am trying to save the gauge cluster in my 84 z28. As it is now the Tach gauge is always maxed out while the car is running or off. The only time the Tach registers is while the car is being started. It reads the starter motor as about 3-4 thou RPMs. Is there a way to readjust the gauge or is it busted?
Thanks,
Richie

Misery loves company. You're not alone. My IROC's tach is sickly wrong too. These units can be repaired, some on the board here have done so as well. Others just install an aftermarket tach and get on with it... If you choose to get the OE cluster repaired, for a quote try these guys; http://www.bobsspeedometer.com

Mine is messed up too....... I drive off from the stop light at a normal pace, and it registers as 4k rpms......

Any recommendations for aftermarket tachs? (Preferably not the huge 5in overkill types)

The tach in my 91 shows idle at around 4k, so yeah I'm in the boat too. From what I've read in the past it has something to do with the resisters getting weak over time. IDK, I like it to work but I've found my Sun Tach 2 does the job just fine. And I now have the benefit of a shift light.

How hard is the install on an aftermarket tach? I haven't looked into it yet, much less have the budget for it right now... Just wondering if I should plan on fixing the stock one or getting a new one..... I kinda like a GM tach I saw that had a Chevy symbol in it.....

These tachs are pretty easy to find at your local pick-n-pull or on ebay. You can even list a request on this site under "parts wanted" You'll be soon swammped with responses. Probably get it for $10.00.

But first, take the bezel and lens off and remove the tach. Then reinstall making sure you're getting a good connection. Also, make sure you're getting a good connection at the base of the distributor cap, I mean the three wires, one of which is for your tach.

I have a similar problem, but nothing is broken. I have a v6 tach and I swapped a v8 in last summer. is there a simple way to switch it? I haven't seen the circut board but my buddy who was doing the interior work said he didn't see anything obvious. Too bad there's no switch like the aftermarket tachs...

Re: Tach gauge, incorrect readout, please advise

You have to disassemble the guage cluster to access the circuit board.

He did... I was there. I was working under the car when he got it apart which is why I didn't see it myself.
