shifter plate disassembly?

Can the "guts" be romoved from the bottom of the auto trans shifter plate? I ask for two reasons.

1) Mine has several cracks and cracked corners - all pieces are there and I can epoxy it back together. I'd like to fill the cracks, smooth things out, and possibly repaint for a good but slightly different look.

2) I'd also like to use some of my OEM contacts to get a quote on new shifter plates (just the flat plastic piece) and we could use those to replace broken plates by transferring the stuff from underneath. I would not duplicate the "automatic overdrive" lettering or ashtray - we'd just do a nice flat textured plate with the shifter and PRNDL windows and holes to fit.

Re: shifter plate disassembly?

good luck. i just went through all that gm nor any aftermarket parts supplier carry anything like it. i paid 110$ for a mint condition shift plate from a 1992 z for mine on ebay. mainly because i like that style better for my 87. if your intrested i have one from a 1987 camaro. few cracks in the corner and needs an ash tray spring. may be a lil more decient then your existing one

Re: shifter plate disassembly?

Auto shifter plates are almost a dime a dozen, go junk yarding, plae an ad on here, or try you know where (but expect to pay way more there!)

Re: shifter plate disassembly?

I don't know about the Camaros, but the Firebird one is very easy to remove.

Re: shifter plate disassembly?

My car is pretty clean with 18K miles - the kid that did the shifter cable recall overtightened several of the screws and cracked the plastic.

Re: shifter plate disassembly?

I'll get the plastics guy at work busy on it. I don't have enough time on the forum yet to place a wanted ad - I'll do that later.

Re: shifter plate disassembly?

I gut the 88-92 camaro shift plates all the time.I have a box full of the underside pieces along with the white/yellow strips and the rippled strips. The hard part is finding a good top plate to attach them to.Sometimes people pass over good shift plates at the junkyards because the underside has become unattached.Alittle bit of adhesive solves that problem.Ive reattached quite a few shift plates and havent had any complaints

Re: shifter plate disassembly?

I've already ordered several sheets of textured on one side ABS that I plan on using to make some prototype plates. It'll be easy to transfer the outline of the current plate onto paper and then into a simple design program that we can use to guide a laser cutter to cut the plastic (including the rectangular windows). Routing the edges and the groove across the front will be easy. I'm not planning on going to the trouble of incorporating an ashtray - this will just be a good looking plate to attach the parts to. I'll post results as soon as I get several done.

Re: shifter plate disassembly?

I've done it before, it's easy.

Here's how to do it.

Re: shifter plate disassembly?

I just sold a pretty mint looking shifter plate on ebay for $25 - I would keep your eyes peeled there.
