Has any sucessfully dyed their firebird dash the correct color?
If so where did you buy the dye from? I want to redo my dash on my 85 and the firebird interiors are so hard to match up, my interior is four different colors. One black and three shades of grey.
I got the black covered with sems "landau black" and the console, guage trim, and the radio housing is close to sems "graphite" so that will work. Also the lightest grey in the car (all the plastic from rear to hatch area) could be a close match to sems "medium grey"
Now my problem.....the dash. It's not actually black but it's noticeably darker than the console and radio housing. What the heck color is that?
What have you guys used on your firebird dashes to get a "factory" look?
And for the record I hate calling it vinyl "dye" when it's actually a paint.

Hmm, all of my dash is black except for the piece around the gauges, and I would consider that piece medium grey or maybe charcoal grey. I'm thinking the light grey that is in most of these cars is called "Dove grey". I could be wrong though.
I'm having the same problem, I'm trying to match my carmine red interior. I got it close but I think I found another color to get it closer.

Hey thanks for the reply, I went to the local paint shop and figured out what will be very close on our birds.
If your interior code is the 85-90 "Medium Dark Gray" then the SEM Classic coat 17103 (GMC 9780) "Dark Gray" is right on the money. It's not 100% perfect, but if your doing the whole interior you'll never notice it.
The SEM 177113 (GMC 7701) "Graphite" will be a pretty close match to the 85 - 90 Firebird console, radio housing, and gauge trim.

Ok, here is a kickpanel I recolored in SEM Classic coat 17103 (GMC 9780) "Dark Gray" .
It's a pretty good match against the factory panel color if not dead - on. The factory panel is dirty and faded a bit.
So it's safe to say if you have a 85-92 camaro or firebird with the code 82 "medium dark grey" interior ....this will be the color you need.

Looks good to me, it looks new. Did you use a clear over it? I noticed after doing my door handle that the SEM paint has a rough feel to it. I'm wondering if a clear coat would make it feel smoother. Below is a pic of my door panel, I painted just the handle with SEM 15363 "Portola Red". It does look a little too light. I have looked at the SEM color chart and it looks like "Firethorn" is a little darker so I may try it. This sh*t gets expensive, so I do feel your pain. lol

Yeah I got several shades of gray sitting on my shelf
Honestly you shouldn't have a rough feel to it, as long as you spray a light "tack" coat to help it set up, wait about 5-10 minutes and then spray a little more on it, and then after a few more minutes hit it with a final full-coverage coat it should dry smooth and have a little sheen to it.
The roughness could be from spraying it on too hot a temp or holding the can too far back....I don't know.

I was probably holding the can too far back, I was trying my best to prevent runs.

Honestly, As long as you have sprayed a "tack coat " first and the temp is at least 70 degrees (but not much more than 80-85) and not very humid you can get away with holding the spray can 3-4 inches from the part.
