Yep, I did it.
Do you have a Camaro or a Bird? I couldn't find a manual shifter plate anywhere for a bird, so I just cut out the gear selector part to open the hole up big enough. I also had to bend the shifter into a slight "S" shape to keep it from hitting the top plate. I hand stitched the boot from cheap black vinyl from Wal-Mart and attached it to the original screw mounts on the bottom of the plate with a bracket that I fabbed from sheet metal.
I eventually ended up swapping in a 4th gen 5spd console....much nicer than the original console.

The part is called a shift plate. There are usually Camaro ones all over ebay.
