Tools?
I was wondering on what tools are needed to work with a 1989 camaro rs?
Socket size and other tools.
I'm looking to do the interior first; i'd like to unbolt the seats and take out the dashboard and alot of other material. Just like to have my tools ready before.
regards in advance,
Timinsk

Re: Tools?
Torx and metric. If you have ANY car, or love to work on things as i do, just buy a good tool set from Snap-on or Craftsman. You always need tools and can never have too many lol.

You sound just like my father. :P Hes a mechanic; but still, he always says "you can never have enough tools" Guy has over thousands of dollars of snap-on and mac tools. You could seriously have a dodgeball tournament w/ tools with the amount he has. But thanks; I'm thinking of buying a set of tools, just wanted to know what set.

Re: Tools?
Most of the interior is Torx and Metric - Torx screwdriver set and Metric sockets - for the interior pieces a 1/4 inch metric rachet set with a 1 inch, 3 inch, and 6 inch extension are needed.
The seats require a 13mm socket, so now we're into a 3/8 inch metric rachet set, with 1 inch, 3 inch, and 6 inch extensions.
The rest of the car could be either metric or standard - depends on where - so now we're talking 3/8 inch AND 1/2 inch metric and standard socket set, along with extensions - just depends on what you're doing at the time.
Brakes require a 3/8 inch Allen, but get one by itself in a socket head for your rachet to do brakes with.
ALWAYS - if possible - get 6 sided sockets - there just is no good reason in this world for a 12 point socket - there never was. They are like a phillips head screwdriver - they ALWAYS strip! The man that invented the 12 pointed socket and the man that invented the Phillips head screw (probably the same dumba$$) should be shot!

And I never strip bolts or nuts. Get the RIGHT size on at the CORRECT angle, and you won't have bolt head stripping problems.
Depending on the year of your car, metric or standard will be needed more than the other...Unless you own a 87, like me. Just to take my dash gauge cover off, it was 3 different sizes...2 metric, 1 standard......

Most of the body is held together with 10MM and 13MM. The seat bolts/nuts are 13MM, but 1/2" will work also. Pretty much the whole dash is 7MM. A lot of the engine bolts are torx too.

Re: Tools?
Guys, we're forgetting the T15, T20, T25, and T47 torx bits, with the addition of the E8 torx bit if he has steering column problems. Best just to get a whole master torx set from Sears... Like $50 gets you any bit you could need. Pick up a 96 piece set, and add a 15mm deep socket, 13/16 plug socket, 3/8 universal joint, 1/4 universal joint, and a magnetic pickup tool. Also possibly a vacuum pump. Hmm... Oh, and you might want to look into 1/2" tools as well, for wheel bearings and engine work...
I could go on and on about this, but I am working on becoming a professional and have over $1k wrapped up in my set...

Re: Tools?
Sounds like you have zero tools. I have a set of these that I use as a second set that I take with me on road trips.

This will get you started and you can just add individual pieces as the need arises. The price is right (I bought mine at Costco). There's enough tools in this set to do what you want with the interior and then some.
