I have a 91 RS convertable. i am wanting to remove the air bag stering wheel. I want to put a nice aftermarket one one it. Can anyone here tell me the best and easiest way to do so. Maybe include pictures also.

 

Pull the SIR fuse from the fuse box, then disconnect the yellow connector at the base of the steering column which will be labeled SIR system so the airbag doesn't blow in your face. Then remove the 4 bolts from the back of the steering wheel which will allow you to remove the air bag. Disconnect it's wiring and set it aside. Now you need a steering wheel puller. First remove the hex nut and use the puller to yank the wheel off it's shaft. Just so you know, removing air bags is illegal and probably not a good idea if your state has mandatory safety inspections.

 

It is illegal, however, rarely enforced. If you look on the V.I.N. tag affixed to your dash (Visable through the windshield) it says "Air bag" on it. GM and other manufacturers did this to discourage people from removing them.
That said, do it, but keep the parts to convert it back. Selling the car down the line with the system removed could open you up to a lawsuit if someone is killed or injured down the line.

To go along with that, you might want to check with your insurance company before switching wheels. If its insured as having an airbag and your remove it, they could refuse to pay any claims if you get in a wreck and get injured.

Thanks for the help guys. Its under custom car insurance. The car will be a show car when Im done and go to the track every now and then. I just cant stand the air bags. I am thinkin of putting the late 80s Iroc Wheel on it I like it better.

 

If you are going the showcar route, I would highly recommend something from lecarra, momo, budnik, billet specialties, etc.
They arent that expensive and look great!

Im not too sure what I am going to do. This will actually be the first show/race car I have built with out a stock stering wheel. But I just hate the air bag ones. My 7 sec nova has the factory Nova SS stering wheel on it still lol. Can you guys post up some pics of what aftermarket stering wheels you have

 

I wouldn't remove it if I were you, but if you do.. here is the wheel that will be on my 87 IROC.. easy to install, nice looking, not too expensive..
