Steering Wheel Removal & Parts ?

Hey Crew,

I have a spongy steering wheel on my formula and the other day at the junkyard i found a newly found a 91/92 firebird V6.

The interior is complete and in somewhat better condition then my car so im going to get some parts from it.

Here is the question. I have a Shop Manual for my car and it isnt really informative on how to get the cover off the wheel and get the wheel off the colum. Can someone please help me with removal of these items.

Also since im going to get some parts, what are ones that are sought after / good to get since i knoticed that third gen parts arent plentiful.

Door panels are good, all trim front and rear, belts are all very clean and not broken, ect.

thanks

There are four torx screws going in from the back of the wheel holding the air bag on. T25 I think. Then you'll have to unplug the airbag and un-do the bayonet plug for the horn. There maybe a safety snap ring over the steering wheel nut and then the nut itself. You will need a steering wheel puller to get the wheel loose from the splines.

Parts wise you never know what you are going to need. If you are looking to sell, stick with stuff that will fit in an 18" box or smaller as shipping gets expensive. I'm keeping my eye out for a power passenger mirror, tan belts and a turn signal switch myself.

Re: Steering Wheel Removal & Parts ?

As far as getting the steering wheel off, here's what AutoZone has to say (it's pretty basic, but it might come in handy...): Steering wheel removal. Also, the beginning of this article has some tips for the airbag equipped steering wheel. AutoZone should also have the steering wheel puller and lock plate depressor in their Loan-a-Tool thing.

Sought after parts (for me anyway):
  • non-A/C firewall covers (I've found 3, all were on V6 cars)
  • the little plastic trim pieces that go where the seatbelt goes into the headliner
  • undamaged dash pad
  • leather covered shift ***** and e-brake handles that are in good shape
  • power window/hatch switches
  • fuse box cover and aldl cover
Anyway, that's just some stuff that I would think might be considered "sought after." Some stuff more than others, though, like the first two especially... I dunno, I guess it depends on the price you can get the stuff for. If it's really cheap then it makes more sense to buy stuff you don't necessarily need right now. Hope that helps.

Disconnect the battery too, just so theres no chance of the airbag going off in your face. Better safe than sorry.

Oh, sorry for the confusion. No, you do not need the lock plate depressor to get the steering wheel off. Sorry about that.

Do you mean me? I've got one now. In fact, I now have all the parts in that list. I just meant that those were some of the parts that I needed for my car in the past, and had some difficulty finding. Sorry for the confusion... <--- second time i've had to say that in one thread, i'm on a roll
