steering column swap??need help seriously....

Hey all,I have ran into a problem with my steering column.
I have a 92 rs v8 5-speed with cruise control.
well my ignition switch broke and when we took apart the column is really in bad shape.
Someone had just thrown a bunch of stuff together.

I need to know what other columns I can use in my car without running into any problems?
I want a column I can put in and go.
Is there any other column that will work without any mods?
I really want to cruise in my 5-speed badly.

Thanks for any and all advice,
JDRACING

Re: steering column swap??need help seriously....

Same problem happened with me and a few more (Vats, Adjustment handle, etc)

You are probably gonna have to get a steering column from another 91-92 that includes a vats box (Unless u have disabled it already).
I did the opposite and went the cheaper way and got a non-tilt/cruise control older column, with vats bypassed it was an easy install besides some of the plug modding which had me cut the old steering column snap on side and connect and rewire it to the new older column.

Check ebay where i got mine or on these forums

if you didnt get your column fixed yet, i can build you one for a decent price, all i need is your vats key with the wire and i can put a tilt together to plug and play, Jim 850-983-6944 or birdsandbowties.com

An '89 column will not work in your car. The wiring is different. You need one from a 90-92 car. We have them available on our site complete with the matching VATS module. Here's a link if you're interested.

Sorry, all we have are tilt columns. I'm not sure if I've ever even seen a non-tilt 90-92 column. Yes, this column will work fine for a manual trans car. The ones we have are from automatics so they have a few extra things on them that you don't need but it will still work fine for your car.

Re: steering column swap??need help seriously....

my mechanic says he has the 89 column figured out.
is that possible?
he says he will have my car ready monday with the 89
column in it.
he said there were a few extra wires, but that he traced everything
down and it should be ready monday sometime.
he is working on a couple other cars and i told him to go ahead and
finish those up first. i figured if i said that he may cut me a little
slack on the price.

some of the post seem to think an 89 column isn't gonna work in a 92 car?
it's kinda got me worried, but he says he traced everything and got it almost ready to go.

what you all think about thgat?
i may not need that column afterall. i hope it is ready monday.
i miss my 305 gas mizer.
that thing sips gas instead of gulping like some i have seen.
i like it.

ok,tell me something Thirdgen Ranch?
Tell me something good.

Re: steering column swap??need help seriously....

I guess it's definitely possible to make it work. Only the wiring is different and if he rewired the column I'm sure you could make everything work. One thing that I would wonder about is that the '89 column should actually have five LESS wires from the '92 column. I'm not sure how worked around that. Also, some of the wire colors are different as well and even one of the connectors is different. That could make for some real problems down the road if you ever have a problem with it again.

If he's able to make it work I would definitely try to get him to draw out what he did to help you solve any future problems.

I will definately get him to make me a drawing of the wiring.
Just wish us good Luck, and thanks
again for your input. Everyones input was ,and is greatly appreciated,
JD
P.S.Thirdgen,If I don't order that column Monday you will know it all
worked out fine.
I have confidence in my mechanic though.
I have seen him pull harder tricks than this off before.
And he is really reasonable on his labor prices.
it's not like going to the GM dealership and having to put
a second mortgage on your home to get your oil changed.
But,everyone makes mistakes,and I am usually
the first to make one.

NOW I have just purchased a 92 rs automatic in really nice condition
with another problem of a completely diffrent kind.
The guy I bought it from went on disability because of back injury.
Well instead of just selling the car,he turned it in for junk because he
was only allowed to have one tagged vehicle in his name.
NOW I am possibly gonna run into trouble trying to get a new title issued for the car.
Like I said,we all make mistakes. I bought the car thinking it was gonna be no problem.
NOW I can't say that for sure.
ANYONE got any ideas on this one?

I'm a little confused. Why can't you get a title for it? Did the previous owner not have it or does it now have a junk title?

If i understand him correctly the original title that was in his name was turned over for a junk title.
He could only have one vehicle registered as on the highway worthy.
I am thinking he either had to get rid of the cars,or show that they were not roadworthy to get his disability approved.
he has a back injury.

I guess what I am saying is the cars title was turned over for junk title.
He no longer has to pay county tax either I think he said.

Anyway, you think i can still apply for a title if it has been turned over for junk?
The car is by no means junk.It is as nice as my daily driver. He just didn't want anything to interfere with his disability.

HELP,
JD
P.S.you guys are really a good help to me.
I am really glad I found this place to talk about my 3rd. gen. car(s)..

You would definitely have to check out your state's laws on that one. I know laws regarding cars with "junk" titles vary from state to state.
