2nd Camaro console clock doesnt work..whats going on?

Ok ive tried two of these things now and neither of them worked. I have the three wires connected correctly i think (not really sure how i could F that up). The first clock would work for about 15 minutes and then stop. Then i could disconnect the power (pull the fuse) and reconnect it and it would work again for 15 minutes and then stop. The second clock does the same thing but instead of 15 minutes its more like an hour or two (havent really timed it). So..is it something im doing or is it the nature of the beast and i just have to keep looking until i find one that actually works 24/7?

It's very common for the console clocks to have problems. However, they usually either work or they don't. The only time I've seen one with a problem like you're having the problem was that the second hand was hanging up on one of the other hands sometimes. You may want to check that.

What is the best way of going about fixing that if that ends up being the cause of the problem? I heard the 2nd hand on these is delicate and i dont wanna break it. I guess careful is just the name of the game here huh...

Ok just went and looked at the clock in the car now. The second hand, minute hand and hour hand are no where near eachother where it stopped. I ever so slightly tugged on the adjuster and it started right back up again. I dont know what to make of that. Do i have a working but finicky clock that needs to be cleaned or something or is it really busted.

Several years ago, I experienced a similar problem. I was ready to send the clock in for repair, but in advance of that, I pulled the clock, blew it out with compressed air, then doused the innards with WD-40. I manipulated the hands for several minutes and stuck it back in. Still works and keeps good time.

Oh, with the clock removed, I polished the plastic face. Came out very nice, if I say so myself.

Where did you spray the wd-40....all over the inside? I would think that would be bad for the electronics. Also did u pull the face to do it or just the plastic face and spray around the back of the metal face?

In my fading memory, the innards/clock works were visible. I don't recall taking anything apart, but....

Yea that would make sense. When u take off the plastic face you can see around the metal face to the innards. There is a gap all the way around.

Good! I thought I'd jumped off the deep end for a moment. Anyway, the 'fix' has lasted a number of years.

Re: 2nd Camaro console clock doesnt work..whats going on?

I currently have about 6 console clocks and on occasion have encountered the same problem. The one installed in my 89 iroc vert works flawlessly. The one installed in my 86 iroc works ok but it has problems on hot days. When parked for awhile with windows up it will just stop after a couple of hours.I have to bang on it to get it started back up.Others I have used the WD-40 as James C stated above. It works well to free up the mechanics as most clocks have been sitting for a bit of time unused in cars that end up at the junkyard

Re: 2nd Camaro console clock doesnt work..whats going on?

Im not going to jinx myself and say that the WD-40 fixed it but yesterday i blew the clock out with compressed air and sprayed some WD on all the gears trying to steer clear of the actual electronics. Well i plugged it in last night and its still working as of 6:30 tonight. So thats the longest ive seen one of these things go for so far.

Pretty much every console clock ive found has been in working condition.I installed one in my old 82 camaro, pulled it out before I sold the car and put back the original console top.It now lives on in my 89 iroc vert. The console clock is one of the coolest options on a 3rd gen camaro IMO
