82-84 instrument cluster

Hi everyone. I've searched this forum and googel it for some time now, but I haven't still found pinout for 82-84 Trans am instrument cluster. All the swaps include either a camaros or newer birds. I am building a 84 trans am replica from a 87 v6 bird, and dont remember how i did the cluster rewiring when swapping in cable driven speedo from donor. Anyway, now i feel like cruise control would be good and also this gives me a chace to make torque converter lock working. I have electric schematics for 84 Trans am, but it dont match mine. Even though i rememebred that from the rusty vin plate i read that the machine is made in 84. I could be wrong because the plate was very rusty. So i tracked the pinouts from my car and i write them here, so maybe anyone who knows can tell me how to wire a cruise control and which year the car is eventually. So here they are:

A: 1. green/ Temp 8. cruise?
2. pink/ fuel gauge 9. light blue/ dir. left
3. grey/ Instrument cluster lights 10. dark blue/ dir. right
4. black / ground 11. not used
5. cruise? 12. shift light
6. cruise? 13. pink-black /(+12v, shift/ses)
7. cruise? 14. brown-white/check engine

B: 1. Light green/High-beam 8. Not used
2. Not used 9. Not used
3. Not used 10. black/ground (volts, oil, fasten seat)
4. black/ ground(inst. cluster lights/fuel/temp) 11. tan / oil pressure
5. choke 12. yellow/ Fasten seat belt light
6. brake light 13. Not used
7. not used 14. white/ tach.

Re: 82-84 instrument cluster

have you made much progress? I see you posted in July originally, I have never seen any wiring diagrams for any firebirds or trans ams although I have seen a couple different sites for different years of Camaros. if I were you I would verify your model year with the vin number and once you know for sure I would order some service manuals on ebay and you will be able to find all of your answers there.

Re: 82-84 instrument cluster

Thanks for the cluster offer, but I don't need it, as mine is in good shape..however if your T/A has cruise, then you could write down the pinout for the cluster, so i can compare it to mine and see wich wires are the power for the vss. I looked at same year camaro wireing ant tryd that - signal to AC module from vss from back of the speedo. I found out that speedo cable supposed to have the same signals-per-mile as the electronic one with buffer box. Anyway it didn't work, and i left it as that. I think that my vss is bad but i left it alone for now...most of my driving is in city traffic anyway and my milage is also quite good (about 23-24mpg, engine is most of the time below 2000rpm) I think i look into it again in winter or spring, since i am not sure that i have the working solenoid in tranny for TCC...dont have the place to do it now..And i am thinking of getting a better manual than chilton, wich has no schematics for wireing.

Re: 82-84 instrument cluster

i have the 1984 pontiac firebird service manual at home with full wiring digrams/pinouts. I'm at work now but if you PM me to remind me, I'll look it up at home and write them out for you or post an image of the page in the manual.

Re: 82-84 instrument cluster

Cluster removal requires you to remove the outer black plastic trim, dashpad and lower drivers side plastic trim. Then, there are about 10 bolts that you unscrew that hold the gauge cluster in place. Once you get it removed from the casing you'll need to place your hand behind the speedometer and press the speedometer cable release. it's a metal press to release that should cause the speedometer cable to disconnect from the gauge cluster. Bulb replacement then becomes quite easy. A word of caution. There is a plastic printed circut on the back of the gauge cluster that has copper inlay's tracing the electrical paths... Be careful with it. It's 30 years old (almost) and when left alone usually will give you no problems. However, once you remove it and starts putting it back in, it can get bent and cause the copper to create a short..

According to my service manual the cluster should come out far enough to be able to press the speedo cab;e release clip but on my 82 it only comes out a little, there is not enough room to get your hand in behind to even reach the cable, I can touch it and see it with a flashlight but getting to it iOS proving to be a real pain in the butt.... is there another way of getting at it? It would have been massively helpful if they had made the slack on the cable just a few inches more then it would be accessible!! Anyone know another way out side of cutting a hole in the top of the plastic dash?

Re: 82-84 instrument cluster

Did you loosen the two nuts, that are holding the steering column (under the lower plastic). If i remember correctly, it gave enough space to squeeze my hand back there..you can also try to push the cable more inside from the engine compartment, if you can ofcourse. I dont remember exactly, cause its been a while now...

Re: 82-84 instrument cluster

Yes I eventually had to do that just to make enough room to get the cluster out altogether. I made a video of what I had to do as I could see I was not the only one having issues with getting that puppy out of there.

Re: 82-84 instrument cluster

Thanks for going through the trouble of making this video and posting it! It helped me a lot. I didn't have to lower the steering column as the tilt mechanism gave me enough slack to take out the cluster.

Re: 82-84 instrument cluster

The only way to do that right is to remove the actual dash screws on both side by the door panels and the 6 under the dash that go into the metal dash underlayment. This will allow you to clear the dash all the way forward so you can access the cluster. I have done this several times.

Re: 82-84 instrument cluster

Before my conversion, i found it easier to just loosen the cable on the tranny side to allow for some slack and push it through the firewall from the engine compartment side once the cluster is lose. If you have cruise control then just disconnect there and push it through the firewall after you loosen the cluster. This allows you enough room to reach back there and unclip it from the cluster.
