85 Overhead Console Puzzle

Hey Folks

Have an 85 IROC in midst of modest restoration. The overhead console in this T Top has a roller assembly at the front for mileage etc., then a map or reading light, then a little leather looking map pouch and then a slot facing forward that appears to have held a smll drawer. Behind that is the interior dome light. Does anyone know what the small drawer or whatever assembly is or was?

Thanks for the help.

Re: 85 Overhead Console Puzzle

its not a drawer. it held a square shaped flashlight that snaps in. search the forum and youll find a picture of one.

Re: 85 Overhead Console Puzzle

It was a flash light, firebird has a firebird flashlight and a camaro had a camaro flash light. Known for the batteries inside of them corroding, plus moisture rises and rusted the terminals. Firebirds were less known to have them, and finding a firebird flash light is slightly harder to find than a camaro one. I have one of each just for my collection as I highly doubt they will ever be remade OER. I had pictures of both together but i'm not sure where the picture went.

Great.

You guys are terrific. I'll stop thinking drawer and start thinking really cool LED replacement gizmo, whizzbang, chromed frotus or whatever. Thanks for the quick and correct replies.

Re: 85 Overhead Console Puzzle

They show up on ebay every so often if you are interested in getting a replacement - it's one of those things that you have to hunt down, and as mentioned, most don't work when you find them, but usually a simple matter of contact cleaning.

After a thorough cleaning several years ago, I smeared the contacts with dielectric grease. Still good to go.

Re: 85 Overhead Console Puzzle

I CLRed all my terminals and cleaned with a qtip, a little sand paper and I didn't use dielectric grease yet, but I got mine working with a 3V LED instead of the insanely expensive for what it is light bulb.

I was thinking it was just a standard old-style flashlight bulb - think I got 3 in a pack a Radio Shack for $2.

Or ... maybe I'm senile and thinking of something else?

Re: 85 Overhead Console Puzzle

lol, possibility, thought I got a single one for like $3 or 4 for the tiny little bugger, and I just went for 2 LEDs instead. I chased after some stupid number on the bulb instead of looking for any bulb that would fit. That would have been my down fall, not sure.

Re: 85 Overhead Console Puzzle

Yeah, I probably went the lazy route and grabbed whatever would fit - it's been a few years, and quite frankly I don't remember much from last week!

Re: 85 Overhead Console Puzzle

That thing is the worlds lamest flashlight! I think the backlight from my cellphone is brighter! LOL! I didnt know the firebird flashlight was rare, though! I keep throwing the things away when I find them in the J/Y! I've got a couple of firebird lights in near-mint shape and cannot, for the life of me find a camaro one for my IROC's O/H console! I just cleaned it up and left the battery out after making sure the bulb worked. (The heat in AZ is not kind to the AA.)

Re: 85 Overhead Console Puzzle

LED conversion fixed the crappy bulb situation. I put a thread up a while ago for someone to trade, and I found someone with a firebird one to trade one of my two camaro flashlights, and so we swapped them with eachother. Put a thread up and offer someone to swap one of your firebird ones with a camaro one.

Re: 85 Overhead Console Puzzle

I should! I'll get around to it sooner or later. Right now I'm more annoyed by my rattling drivers door. Being a cop car, the drivers door was opened and closed about a million times (At least!) and the passenger door is still like new! (Was a speed-trap car and came to me a few years ago with just 50,000 miles. Still only has 52,000.)

Ah! Thank you! That will be helpful! Just about everything in the door is worn out, including the manual regulator.
