converting to split back seats?

I've been offered a set of deluxe interior seats, but before I get them, I'd like to know what's involved in converting my solid back rear seat to a split back. I did a search, but I must not have used the right terms because I didn't come up with much

You'll need the spot welded on studs that slip in the holes in the seat backs, so that they can pivot on them.

its actually a single bar, welds to the top of the tunnel with a reinforcement olate over the top to spread the load. IIRC, its something like 1/2" OD.

cutting it form a doner car wold be the best route, you can get some basic measurements at the same time

Re: converting to split back seats?

do I need a special factory bracket, or is it something that can be fabricated with relative ease? I have a car available that I can take measurements from

Re: converting to split back seats?

i drilled the four spot welds and pulled the bracket with a flat head screw driver. When I go to drop mine back in, again...4 spot welds and i'm done. Of course I would set the back seats in there so that I can get proper alignment while spot welding or even mark the spots to weld, but I have faith in my welding to not screw up my seats lol.

Well yeah. 1 big flat bar like a saddle on the tranny tunnel, with the 2 studs sticking out of it.

When you cut one out of a junkyard, I'd take every measurement you can think of to locate them, and then take some more. Not sure how you could set it in there with the seat backs & then mark its location with everything in there.

Re: converting to split back seats?

yes, that does help. I'll still go to my buddies car for exact measurements, but at least I can picture what I need

I'm having another thought though... I might need to buy a new set of fabric covers for the seats when I get them. I could always buy the set for a solid back set, and just reuse my one piece back, but with the delux covers... right?

Couldnt someone drill holes into the bracket and bolt it down? I just got a set of split seats so I was looking at theses old posts. First id need that bracket with the studs pin. Then who does the spot welding? I might just glue in a metal rod between the two halves and make it solid and non-split. Not like I'm gonna be throwing anything viable into that useless trunk! lol
