Brooken Speedo-wait that sounded really bad

I have an 86 Camaro Berlinetta, has the funky kph/mph dual needle gauge in it. I took the car for its maiden voyage the other day on the interstate. Speedometer was off which I expected due to big tires but it just kept climbing until it went around the gauge to about 35 at 60mph. Now when the cars off it stays at about 55mph. Is this likely the gauge being broken? If so I wouldn't remind replacing it, what would swap in directly? What could other issues be? I had to swap the 700r tail-shaft onto the turbo 350 tranny when we put the v8 in with speedometer gears etc... if that may have anything to do with the issue

Please help, thanks!

The following link has info on why mechanical speedos fail:

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/inte...eedo-woes.html

If the speedo head is shot, you can replace it with any mechanical speedo head, 82-89, which includes 85, 110 and 140 (replace only the head or you may experience some electrical gremlins). I'm unsure what the tail shaft replacement might or might not do. The drive and/or driven gears, however, must be appropriate to the rear end gear ratio or the speedo won't read correctly.

If the speed is off a bit due to tire/gear size im okay with that but it sticking like it is isn't acceptable. Sounds like I need to lube up the cable as a first step. Will T/A and Firebird speedometers go in just as easily?

A dual-needle speedo in 86? What happened to the digital dash?

Lubing the cable won't have any effect. If you replace the head, Firebird speedometers won't fit. It'll have to be from a Camaro.

Digital dash would be kinda cool, but it was long gone by the time I got the car.

What does it take to put a 91/92 speedometer on it? Found a whole cluster for really cheap.

A 91/92 interior, plus a bunch of rewiring.

Remember that 82-89 and 90+ clusters aren't interchangeable without considerable modification: The first has a mechanical speedo, the second electric. Furthermore, the shape of the two clusters is significantly different.

Re: Brooken Speedo-wait that sounded really bad

I have a 140 MPH cluster from a '88 sitting around that i'd be willing to part with. I don't know if the VSS buffer works but every thing else does.
