Horn Doesn't Work?

Gurus, what are common causes for the horn to suddenly stop working? Any common issues to look at, or easy fixes? Thanks in advance!

Car is 1991 Formula with air-bag steering wheel.

Re: Horn Doesn't Work?

1-check fuse
2-cancelling cam could be broken(most likely)
probably going to have to pull wheel to check that and the springs.

Re: Horn Doesn't Work?

Did both sides quit working? You could first pull the airbag off to check the breakable plastic horn buttons and to see if the spring loaded end stays in the canceling cam tube Ok, or that the ground wire is intact. Have to do that to remove the wheel anyway, and the problem could just be in there

Re: Horn Doesn't Work?

Try the switches on the wheel first. They are easy to replace and frequently break afte 20 years. To test, pull the lead and short it. If the horn works, replace the switches.

Hmmm. Gonna try this first and then make my way to the plastic pieces and also look for corrossion as mentioned. Didn't get to it yet because of weather and travel....thanks for all the advice!

Re: Horn Doesn't Work?

The horn's fuse is the same one used for many accessories. If it was blown, then you would have no dome light, electric door locks, hatch release, cigarette lighter, under-hood light, and maybe a couple more. If any of them work, then it's safe to say the fuse is good.

Most likely, your problem lies in the wheel with the horn button. I'd also check at the horn itself in the fender, maybe a loose wire...

Re: Horn Doesn't Work?

If you have to hit the button just right to make it work,It's the button or the plug to it is loose.

Re: Horn Doesn't Work?

I also have a horn (in a '91 FB Convertible) that will not work! Found fuse (ACC 20 amp) it's fine.. Founds both fans on DS fender.. I'll try cleaning contacts up… Likely it is the horn button.. What should it look like?? I see two contacts but nothing there to make the touch?? What should be in there?? I'll check the relay as a last resort!!

Had to replace the buttons when I first bought my '91 GTA. Easy fix. You don't need to remove the whole steering wheel, just the airbag IIRC. Make sure you pull the airbag fuse before pulling the airbag. Make sure you pull the ACC fuse before replacing the switches.
