Stubborn shift knob: clip pulled!!!

Stubborn shift ****: clip pulled!!!
Okay I'm doing the console resto on my 87 GTA and I cannot get the auto shift **** to budge even though I pulled the clip out of the front of it. What am I missing besides a potential hernia trying to pull it off? Does the button on the shift lever have to be depressed? This is the leather handle style palm shifter.

Should just lift off,depress the lever and wiggle it up,put some thing under it and hit it slightly.
