Adding Rear hatch release???

I'll be taking a recently purchased Iroc out of storage next month to start getting it to look like I want for my mid life crisis rebuild. I'd like to add a rear hatch release. It's currently non existant in the car...Is this something that can be done? I'll be removing the interior and thought this might be a good time to look into it...
Any help or thoughts are appreciated.

Re: Adding Rear hatch release???

Parts are available and the wiring harness should already be there in the car to accommodate the upgrade, although you did not mention what year it is. Good luck with your project.

Re: Adding Rear hatch release???

Thank you for the reply...It's an 86 Iroc...Will it be as simple as mounting the release switch and tying it into the relase hatch wiring harness? Sounds to good to be true.

Re: Adding Rear hatch release???

I know there's some sort of control, a relay perhaps, that prevents you from "accidentally" releasing the hatch when you're driving, so it won't be plug and play.

And don't forget, you will need to mount the dash switch that controls it.

Re: Adding Rear hatch release???

I've done it and it is almost plug and play as all the wiring and connectors are in place. You'll need the dash switch and cover with the extra hole. The connector is tucked in behind the cover. The connector to plug the relay into is under the passenger side of the dash. Tucked in and not easy to get at but do-able. I skinned a knuckle. Then in the trunk replace the manual release with the solenoid release. The wire for the solenoid should just be hanging there somewhere. I swapped the parts from a donor car and bought the switch and dash plate from Third Gen Ranch.

Re: Adding Rear hatch release???

Thats some great detail...Thank you so much. Sounds easy enough. I just need the parts.
Do I need a whole new cover or can I mount the switch to the existing one?

Re: Adding Rear hatch release???

It's just the narrow oblong part that comes off separately. Mine just had a fog light switch. I was going to cut a hole then saw one with two holes already so bought that one. Check Third Gen Ranch for covers and switches. They don't always have them but worth a try.

Re: Adding Rear hatch release???

i did this to my car.i hooked it directly to my aftermarket remote power door lock module.btw some of the later camaros had pull down motors and used different rear latches.i don't know if the power release module fits all year cars.

Re: Adding Rear hatch release???

Here's a pic of the wiring and relay you will need.

Notice the 2 wire plug at the top of the wiring bundle. The male end of this connection ( connector C241 ) will be hidden inside your center console. Simply plug the relay in at this spot, mount the button, run the wiring to the hatch, mount the soleniod - done. The set-up pictured above is $55 + shipping,... everything you'd need. Send me a PM for details if your interested.

FYI: You must use a Release Soleniod from an 82-85,..... the 86-91 "PPD" version of the soleniod will not mount properly to your hatch latch.

This should help too: Here's the Wiring Schematic for your 85:

Re: Adding Rear hatch release???

John,
Great stuff there, thank you.
To confirm...I own an 86 model year. Will the above set up work with my car? You mention the release seleniod being different after the 85 model year. Ifnot, do you have the 86 PPD version?

Re: Adding Rear hatch release???

Wow; I'm an idiot !! Not sure why I had an 85 set-up in mind while writing this ! I think it's cause I had just written to someone about an 85 coupe nose..... Whoops !!

Just about all the details above are the same for your 86 IROC. The one and only thing that would change is the actual release solenoid. You would need to use the 86-91 style Solenoid ( yes - I have this one. )

Sorry I didn't pick up on that sooner !

Re: Adding Rear hatch release???

No worries John,
Same deal $55 + shipping?
At that point, all I'll need is the switch?

Re: Adding Rear hatch release???

Yup, same deal,....... and the Hatch Release Switch is already included.

With the smaller soleniod this stuff might even fit into a small flate rate package. I'd need your ZIP to get an exact shipping quote for Ya'.

And don't forget to post some pics of your "mid-life crisis" when you get it out of storage. Good luck with your project.

John,
Thanks so much...I'm just up the road a bit in Framingham....01701
Let me know what you want to do.

Rich,
I'll post before, during and after pictures. My wallet needs to catch up with my wants.
The car it's nice the way it sits, but not exactly the way I want it to look.

Re: Adding Rear hatch release???

Well, as I said, Good luck with it. My 3rd gen isn't a mid-life crisis as I've had these kind of cars my entire driving life, but I appreciate anyone that appreciates them so I'm looking forward to seeing yours and what you do with it.

Re: Adding Rear hatch release???

Ohhh it's not my first one at all. This is my fourth one in the last twenty five years...I just didn't expect to own one again at this stage of my life, hence my mid life crisis....looking forward to enjoying it with my young daughter.
