Cup Holder(s)?

Let's see some pics of how you incorporated a cup holder or two in your Third Gen!

I need some ideas as I bring this car back to life.

It holds some 20oz drinks, 16.9oz is no problem. I haven't found a fast food cup that won't fit yet, even a extra large McDonald's cup fits fine.

The bigger one is too big, won't fit. I ordered one and it was a no go. Ended up ordering the ten pack, I figured I can find other uses for them.

I think that's the best place to put it.. really looks stock. Would be scared to cut a big hole in the upper console though.

Re: Cup Holder(s)?

Kinda off topic but i really need to do this. Every time me and my wife get fast food in my car i have to hear about how dumb my car is for not having cup holders. I tell her its built for speed not comfort lol.

Re: Cup Holder(s)?

If you can get a hold of an old console with the clock in it, the hole for the clock would be perfect for a cup holder. I think its in the same spot as the one pictured.

Re: Cup Holder(s)?

How is the clock centered Mike? If you look closely you'll see I centered the cup holder to the hatch pop switch. The cup holder is actually off center to the right in the actual panel it is in. I think if I had actually centered it that it would look off center due to the location of the switches.

Re: Cup Holder(s)?

Good question. I think its right in the middle. Somewhere on this site I saw some photos of the console with the clock still in it. Your probably right. I never noticed that the switches are off center. Good eye.

Re: Cup Holder(s)?

It's hard to tell from that picture, everything looks centered on it including the switches. I wonder if they off set the switches in the later years, mine is a 1990 for reference.

Re: Cup Holder(s)?

Mine is an 87. But I don't think the clock was offered as an option after 84 or 85. Im guessing but I don't remember ever seeing one in an IROC, Just in the Z28s from the first three years or so.

The center console of the Camaro is made of two pieces. For a cupholder installation you don't need to remove anything because under the plate (behind the window switches) there is empty space that will accommodate something hanging down like a cup holder or clock assembly. However, if you are installing a clock, you'll need to remove the top portion of the console to access holes to screw the clock into.

To do it clean, invest in a hole cutter bit for a drill. They are available at any Lowes or Home Depot or, what I did, was find a used tool dealership where I paid 7 bucks. Trace the bottom first then score it with an xacto blade so the bit will have a guideline to prevent slight kickback and a subsequent scratch to repair (this happened to me).

Re: Cup Holder(s)?

There is a company who incorporates the cup holder with a new armrest pad. A search should find them.

Some guys get a $5.00 holder and attach to the side of the console.

OR...buy a 4th gen centre console (with built-in cupholder) and swap.

I like the accessory outlet; that's a perfect low profile spot.

I have the fold down cup holders. They work really well. The only problem is that in cool weather when using the heater, the heat blows right on my cold soda. It'd be great if I were a coffee drinker!
