custom steering wheel install

Has anyone removed a steering wheel from the hub to install a custom
wheel? How is it attached? Looks like rivets but I hesitate to drill them
out. Any hints / horror stories ?

Not very hard at all. I have no idea what rivets you are talking about.

Re: custom steering wheel install

It is a commonly replaced/upgraded part. Since you have a pre 90 Fbody you should have no air bag to worry about. Should be able to just remove the horn button, attach a steering wheel puller and remove. Grab a Haynes or Chiltons from any auto store.

Re: custom steering wheel install

i believe hes wanting to USE the OEM hub and replace the OEM steering wheel with a different one instead of using an installation kit

Re: custom steering wheel install

After I replaced my wheel with an aftermarket, I got to looking at it and thinking " did I buy the installation kit for nothing" because the factory wheel had a 6 bolt hub that it mounted to. My grant has a 6 hole pattern too. No dice, the pattern is a different size and it will not fit aftermarket wheels.

Re: custom steering wheel install

Should be straight forward. I had to buy an install kit and modify it a bit with a rotary tool. The wheel hub would bind up and give me hell in steering. Once I ground down the burrs on there it was good to go!

Re: custom steering wheel install

Sorry, guys, I haven't been watching my messages. Thanks for the input. As mjdavis68
says, I am planning on using the existing hub. Haven't worked up the nerve to try to
remove the old wheel yet as my car is my everyday driver.
