loose pivot pins in column

have the loose column issue took it all the way down to the 4 bolts and they were all pretty tight got maybe less than a 1/4 turn on 2 of them put it all back together and the problem persisted. took it all apart again and noticed that when I pull down on the column with all the covers off (tension spring still in) one of the pivot pins (left one) seems to move around more than it should. when I pulled them out they weren't damaged at all or anything of that sort.

any1 shed some light on this or suggestions? are there a bit larger pins that can be used? this is the 4th time taking everything apart (down to 15 minutes to take it all apart ) and im determined to get this fixed. thanks in advanced

Did you replace the bearing? It seems like I used to get a repair kit at the dealer that came with bearings and pins. Cant remeber for sure

Re: loose pivot pins in column

if you are talking about the bearings that go around the actual shaft then no. everything there looked ok. ill have to take it all apart again when I build up some motivation. still been doing searches on the forums but nothing really useful

Re: loose pivot pins in column

I think Dorman offers the pins. They do wear. You already know that the head piece and the yoke that it hinges to with the pins are seperate pieces from the column itself and can be replaced if the pin bores are worn. The last tilt column I had this looseness problem with was in a 70 Olds Toronado. The column on that car was quite similar to that of the 3rd gen. I had to swap out the pins, the yoke and the head piece from a donor column to finally get the slop out of it. All of the tilt columns of that year range are close in design. You will likely have good luck using parts from any tilt column GM midsize car from the early to mid 80s.
