91-92 Gauge Cluster

Hey guys,
What options are there for the 91/92 gauge cluster. What's a nice way of modernizing these? I have to get in there anyways to get my Speedo set-up with my LS.

Best,

What are you doing with the speedo? It's electronic so there's no digital converter box needed like with the cable driven speedos.

Myself and others have done simple things like put LED's in the back lighting (mine are red), and colored the needles. I used a red sharpie on my needles.

Re: 91-92 Gauge Cluster

I bought the car with the LSx/T56 swap done and the speedo doesn't work - plus the gauge cluster just seems dated and dim.

What's required to get the speedo working, and do you have any pictures of guages with LED's? A little freshing up may be all the Dr ordered.

Thanks!

Carbon Fiber vinyl is a relatively quick and cheap way to change it up a bit.

From taking apart dash, applying and cutting the vinyl, to putting it all back together again took just over an hour.

Re: 91-92 Gauge Cluster

Is the car originally TPI/V6 or TBI? The speedos are ran differently between them. If it is originally TBI then probably what the issue is, is that the speedo buffer box hasn't been bypassed. Under the dash on the passenger side there is a plastic box, black I think, sorta by where the hvac ducting and ECM were originally. There are two brown wires on pins C and F (pretty sure those are the pins but not sure). You need to cut those two wires and splice them together so they bypass the box. Speedo should work then provided the wiring was done right and there are no blown fuses.

Re: 91-92 Gauge Cluster

The car was originally a 5.0, 5 speed car. Now has a computer out of a 2002 TA with the LS/T56.

All the other gauges work, tach etc. So I find this buffer box and splice two wire to bi-pass it?

Who would have guessed.

Thanks
Asim

Was it originally TBI or TPI? (RS or Z28??)

That will tell you if what I said will *probably* fix it.

As I mentioned earlier, that fix is for if it was originally a TBI car (RS).

First place I would look is to see if there are any blown fuses under the dash on the driver side. There should be one that powers the speedo if memory serves me.

Hey Nick do you have a pic of your needles you did with the red sharpie? I never thought of what I am going to do with mine as they are faded and almost white.
