Instalation of afertmarket instrument cluster panel

I have a 91 RS and recently purchased the entire aftermarket instrument panel cluster with Auto Meter gauges from Classic Industries. I have assembled the gauges into the cluster and have completed the cluster wiring. The question I have is that the assembled cluster seems like it will be hard to physically fit in the space where the old cluster was due to the tight space to work in. Do you have to drop the steering column or disassemble the entire dash?

Old cluster comes in and out nicely if you lower the column a few inches by unscrewing the nuts to the end of the bolts. You have to remove the steering wheel of course.

Is the steering wheel a problem due to the Airbag?

Not too much. Just make sure you disconnect the battery so it doesn't blow up in your face.

I removed my airbag in my 91 and went with a Grant steering wheel. Damn thing looks like a brick in the middle of the wheel I hated it.

The Grant Wheel looks awesome! What retailer did you find it at. I agree with you on the brick look and have wanted to change it out but have not found the replacement for a 91 Camaro.

You can use the 82-89 hub kit from Grant, you just have to shave down the black dish it comes with about 1/8-1/4 inch to make it fit. After you remove the airbag you remove the airbag warning light bulb from the instrument cluster and your good. Just beware the airbag code will always come up when you do diagnostics. Ignore the code.

I looked up the wheel # on the grant website, then ordered it from Ebay.

Hey MM,

Thanks for all your help. One more question on the instrument cluster.

Did you have to cut away some of the plastic housing on the original dash housing to get the new cluster to fit?

I modified my original cluster, I didn't replace it with aftermarket, so I can't really say.

Only way to tell would be to take out your old one and compare them.

I did a write up of installing aftermarket gauges into a 90-92 camaro using a DIY modified gauge housing. Check it out and then ask any questions you still have.
