I've searched the interior section and didn't find an answer...
I'd like to use the Camaro console and selector plate with a Firebird shifter because my daughter has a difficult time pressing the button on the 'square' ball shifter in her 88 Camaro and I was wondering if the T-handle shifter from a Firebird will work in a Camaro console. Has anyone done this swap successfully?
T-Handle should be a direct swap. I don't think the shifter plate will be though. I suspect you will need to swap the entire center console. In the firebirds, the center console and the radio pod are two separate pieces. Are they one piece in Camaros?
Went to LKQ in Greenville, SC today and picked up a T-handle out of an 87 Firebird. Also, plucked the near-perfect front and rear seats from it. The drivers seat bottom on the Camaro was worn through to the foam so I was looking to replace the fronts but the rear was in such good shape and it would look better to have them matching... I can't wait to get them cleaned up and installed and put the shifter handle on.
I've been busy the last few weeks making changes to the Camaro and thought I'd update with some before and after pictures. I got the T-handle installed and it works easier for my daughter to put into gear. I got the seats cleaned up and installed. I really like the feel and look of them a whole lot better than the Camaro seats. I had an 89 IROC years ago but these seats seem more comfortable than I remember the IROC's.
I also replaced the standard steering column with a tilt column and replaced the front seat belts.
As others have said, GM shifters will fit. I have a mid 80s Caddy Alante shifter in my 92 RS. It's unusual and has an unusual push button. Well, I think it was from an Allante, but I can't find one that looks like it right now.
