3rd gen dash, 4th gen column?

I hope this is in the right spot lol

Hey guys, I've seen members put 4th gen dashes in their car, but was wondering if anyone has tried a 4th gen column? I want to try and put a 4th gen column with a 3rd gen dash since I'm using an LT1.

My 84 has an LT1, 4th gen dash, and column and Im thinking about putting the 4th gen engine and trans in my solid 92 but ONLY if I can use the 4th column and 3rd gen dash. Will the harnesses even work like that?

I did the entire 4th gen interior swap. The steering column fits but you have to fab up the ends to fit. The end of the steering column sits 90' opposite the steering shaft. I used a Astro van steering shaft and grinded the edges of the column with a angle grinder. Then drilled a bolt hole thru both to make it work. I haven't had a problem and it work perfect.

I did the same thing, works great. The astro intermediate shaft looks much better. The cancel cam for the turn signal is light as a feather

Ahh Sweet. I was worried it wouldn't work at all. My friend said wiring wont be a problem since the engine swap anyway, but said getting the top of the column attached to the 3rd dash will definitely be. Thanks though guys, great info!

From the firewall towards the interior of the car, the columns are basically identical. The guts inside are identical. Neat huh? GM didnt do much different with their steering columns until everything started going digital.

The problem, as others have stated, is after the firewall. The shaft sticks into the engine bay further, and is also clocked different. The Astro Van shaft is an EXCELLENT upgrade over the stock shaft in several ways.

Otherwise...you can easily bolt the rest in. I didnt notice any difference with the turn signal canceling cam on the 4th gen unit that I tore into. But I never installed it in the car. Just used some of the guts to upgrade my 86 column. Mostly for delay wipers.

Wait, you got 4th gen delay wipers to work? I have been trying to do so since about June. They work, but they park vertical in between sweeps, and the only delay that works is about 1 second (that's how long it rests for). The rest of the delay doesn't work. If you did get them to work, what exactly have you done?

I am about to create a different plate for the wiper motor to mount to. Short of that I am a bit clueless. (Does the linkage arm from the newer 4th gen motor play a role in the delay. I am considering trying to make it work with that again.)

Yup 4th gen and 3rd gen columns are the exact same from firewall back even the wiper amd cruise switch. I just used the tilt wheel guts from a 99 z28 to fix my 92 column.

Did your car originally come with delay wipers?

Re: 3rd gen dash, 4th gen column?

Yea it did. My original wiper motor however suffers from a broken cover making the delay wheel and assorted parts useless and untransferable to a nondelay wiper from a 3rd gen. Being that my car is a GTA, I refuse to give up until delay wipers are returned to the car. Haha

Re: 3rd gen dash, 4th gen column?

Well the cover is what handles the delay. So if its busted, that coudl be most of your problem. There are two contacts that are spring loaded that make contact with the inside of the cover. If those are losing contacts, that could cause the wipers to stop in the wrong spot I guess.

Get a good cover, make sure all the wiring is good, and it should work. I think non-delay covers are completely different...hence not being able to swap the guts.

I was kinda hopin to get the 4th gen motor to work and that's actually what I thought you meant when you said you got the delay wipers to work haha. After it started interfering with my line of sight, I removed it. The4th gen one parks vertical, but it's straight up as opposed to diagonal like the 3rd gen one.
