wiring in shifter plate light

Hey guys, my 86 trans am came with a camaro center console that the previous owner put in terribly, I replaced it with a correct Firebird center console but I ran into an issue.

this car has never had a light to show what gear you're in (auto 700r4). while I had the interior completely removed I could never find any wires or bulb socket for that light which is odd because I thought every thirdgen would have this light to let you know which gear you're in.

I bought the light socket off of someone on here. is there a wire nearby that I could splice into in order to illuminate the bulb? I have power windows, power mirrors, and the center console storage light in the area. if not, how would I go about this? thanks

Re: wiring in shifter plate light

The obvious wire to splice into is one that has power when the park/headlights are on. The question is which one do you want to splice into?

The HVAC or radio illumination wire would be my first choice. You're going to need a schematic/color code for this. Try this link:

Thanks, it's looking like the brown dimmer wire for the radio is the one I'm going to use. I don't think I have it hooked up to the radio anyways.

I'm guessing the other wire goes to ground correct?

You want the gray and black wires. Like the ones you'll find on the back of the HVAC controls, or on every lighted switch in the car, etc.

BRN is lights on, but Gray is controlled by the dimmer. FWIW.

If you want the light dimable use the grey wire if not use the brown wire.

And then the second wire from the bulb just goes to ground correct?
