Plastic/Rubber Slider Cover for Automatic Shifter Plate

A while back a user by the name of KonArtist made a thread about the plastic piece he created to replace his slider cover that had crumbled over time, as mine has done. Has anyone else done this at all and can they explain the process they have used? Does anyone know where one can maybe even buy one? No used examples have shown up on any car part shopping market I have searched upon.
-Thanks!

Re: Plastic/Rubber Slider Cover for Automatic Shifter Plate

You're probably not looking to buy an entire reproduction shift plate at $160, but the slider part would be included with that. Ironically, the slider piece was about the only part of my old shift plate that wasn't cigarette burned, broken, or otherwise worn out on my car when I replaced the shift plate on my '91.

Not sure if they're interchangeable between the 1984-89 and 1990-92 cars as the later ones had the orange indicator that moved with the slider, but I'll sell you my old one if you like. PM me if interested.

Here's a few pix if you're interested. Will let you have it for $25 shipped to the continental U.S.

I will let you know because I am very interested; I'm just still curious as to how one can make a custom one as well. These parts seem to break all the time and it surprises me that no one makes them to resell them.

I am in the process of finding one of these too. I cannot find the stuff KonArtist was talking about in stores but I can find it online. I was looking into these, I am not sure if he used the fine or the cleat type. I think this is what he used since they sell it at lowes and home depot only online. Amazon had smaller sizes.
Cleat:
CLEAT CLEAT
Fine Rib:
RIBBED RIBBED

If you think this will work or if you found a different solution please let me know what you did. Thanks!

Re: Plastic/Rubber Slider Cover for Automatic Shifter Plate

Those Amazon pieces look like they are rubber. I can't imagine rubber sliding smoothly the way this piece needs to. But I could be wrong.

Re: Plastic/Rubber Slider Cover for Automatic Shifter Plate

I just used a flimsy black plastic report cover or 3 ring binder from school supplies section. Drilled a hole for shifter and cut it out to size with utility knife. Of course it's not ribbed but just smooth finish, but it's worked great for last 12 years!
