Crappy Door Panel Fitment
Crappy Door Panel Fitment
Anyone have experience with this? 87 TA with new weather stripping, installed door panels after repairing crack and its seems the fitment is good at back of door where it sits on top of the new weather strip but in the front near triangle it sits a little higher and door panel is pulling away from hard plastic when door pins are pushed in It. Looks to be undue stress where the repaired crack was before repair .Do they all do this ? Any tips?
Thanks in advance!

Re: Crappy Door Panel Fitment
Well, the board slips between the cap and tabs, and the various nuts should hold the cap tight to the board. Beyond that if the board is in good shape, and the hardware is all there, it should be tight and orderly. Problem is people break the tabs, rip the fasteners from the board, and reuse clips. When all that holds the cap on the board are thoughts, prayers, and duct tape, they fit like garbage.

Any pics of the problem area and the repaired crack?
Might be a case of the repair being too thick to allow the panel to slide over the area it needs to go down over.

Re: Crappy Door Panel Fitment
I'm not sure if this is a related problem, but I replaced the black plastic top rails on both of my doors a few months ago. The originals were cracked (a common problem -- especially for 1987 model year, it seems), and I acquired original GM parts (hardly used).
Everything seemed to go smoothly -- we didn't even break any of the plastic studs, and the cardboard is still in mint condition (no tears or rips).
However, I noticed that the black plastic rail on the driver's side is now not held as closely against the window as on the passenger side. It moves around a bit more than I would expect (too much play). In fact, in the middle of the door, there is almost a 1/8" gap between the weatherstripping and the glass, so I hear excess road noise from the driver side door.
Is it possible that the black plastic rail did not clip in properly? Maybe it clipped on the wrong feature of the door? That doesn't seem that likely, but maybe someone has observed this problem before. I'll probably end up taking the driver side door apart in the spring, but if someone has some advice for me, I would appreciate it.
Thanks, John
