Outer window sweep, left door, window down. Removed sweep, glass then pushed hard out

Was following instructions.

Removed the door panel.

Everything came off nice, and in one piece, on the left side.

Removed the "triangle", the water deflector. That took a while.

A few seconds and the mirror was off.

Now to the window sweep. The long part that goes along the top of the door.

It only had four or so screws. Was able to remove them all, without trying to undo anything and make the glass move.

Lifted the window sweep off.

As soon as that happened, the glass which is all inside the door then pushed out and into the metal.

Have looked at two books, 1982 Pontiac Service Manual and Haynes, which has many detailed pictures of the door area, but can't figure out how to move the glass, how to get it loose, how to have it centrally located and not pushing outwards.

Am stuck. No idea. The glass is stuck?

Do eventually want the window back up, and the window sweep back on.

Don't want to wreck, scratch, break the glass.

Power windows.

Have looked through the books, looked through this site too, watched some videos, but don;t know what happened or how to fix it.

Thank you if you have knowledge about the window glass inside the left door pushing outwards, with some force too.

im not following you...it pushed towards the car or outwards past the door? pics?

the glass will move back and forh without the sweeps or those brackets that push the indow on the top of the door.

Are you trying to remove the window??

Re: Outer window sweep, left door, window down. Removed sweep, glass then pushed hard

Was removing the window sweep.

Took the sweep out, of the left door, and immediately the window from inside the door pushed outwards. Did not want to break anything, could not get any movement in the other direction.

the glass will move back and forh without the sweeps or those brackets that push the indow on the top of the door.
So there was no back and forth movement. Instead it was pressed quite forcefully into the door metal, where the window sweeps once were.

Spent a few days reading, researching, loosening many of the adjustment bolts.

Do have the sweep back in place for the moment, maybe moving the inside the door and upside down in/out adjustment bolts helped a little bit.

Did not know, as was just looking at removing the window sweeps, but door window adjustments are done with the window halfway down. From reading the service manual.

Obviously from reading window sweep instructions, the window has to be all the way down when doing that.

Was just about to see if I could now raise the window, see if adjustments can make it located in a more central part. Or at least have it set so there is some movement, so work can be done.

Thank you for looking at the questions, will post again if the problem is not fixed, or gets worse.

Sounds like the window started to roll up. When I did my window scrapers the glass would flop in the door

Left window is fine, at the moment.

A lot loose, but not driving anywhere for a while so not a problem. A very long while.

Didn't break anything, that is a plus.

Have it up nicely.

Windows may not have moved in 10, or 20, years so things could have gone a lot worse.

Now trying the right side, and just need to get the glass lower to access two screws holding the outer window sweep. Not having any success.

Using this good information:

https://www.thirdgen.org/windowadjust/

Reading the books, watching the videos.

Can't find a 1982 video. Just as the terrible triangle was reworked to make it much easier to remove, in 1984 or 1985, will assume the window sweep changed from hard-to-undo screws to the 7mm bolts around the same time?

Is that correct? Different triangle for 1982 compared to most later ones, screws instead of little bolts, one bolt on top with the felt instead of two unless this one is just missing one, some other minor differences?

Will keep trying. But if there are some great instructions to get the glass lower, let me know.

sounds like its stuck under the door skin lip. get a light and check the whole glass.....it should be free.....there should be nothing in its way to prevent it from moving....possibly a corner or edge is stuck or jammed against something. ..

Re: Outer window sweep, left door, window down. Removed sweep, glass then pushed hard

the window glass will push out against the sweep naturally, and if the sweep isn't there, into the metal frame of the door.

to get the sweep back in it's best to remove the felt covered guides on the top (inside of the glass) and push the glass away from the outside edge..

there may be one or two screws that will be pretty tight to get to even with the glass held back.

Re: Outer window sweep, left door, window down. Removed sweep, glass then pushed hard

I had to use a Phillip’s bit with the closed end of a box end wrench to put a couple of those screws back in while holding the glass back a bit. There just isn’t a lot of clearance near the back of the door. Also had to buy a couple more screws at the hardware store because mine was missing a couple to begin with (probably removed when previous owner repainted). Just make sure you put all the screws in while the interior door panel is still off because you will likely drop the screw or bit in the door (possibly multiple times like me) and have to retrieve with a magnet.

For the interior sweep, those were bad on my car too. There is a staple you have to remove and some mushroom shaped clips in the plastic piece molded into it that will probably break off when you remove it. I drilled some small holes in the remaining structure and used a small rivet gun to put the new interior sweep onto the door panel.

Good luck man, it can be a tedious job at times.
