Hey y’all, just picked up a 1987 T/A GTA and so far the biggest thing that needs to be redone is the interior. It’s currently all gray which I’m not the biggest fan of so since the interior needs a remodel it was a no brainer to change the color scheme. I’m planning on getting the front deluxe and rear seats reupholstered to red. I’m pretty dead set on the seats being red but I’m still not sure what I should go with for the other interior colors.
Going with an all red interior like some 3rd gens came with would maybe be a little too much red so my thinking is that I can do an all black interior minus the red seats ofc. Would this look off? I was thinking of accenting different parts red as well so it’s not just the seats that are red but I’m getting stuck on what would look nice. The different interior parts that I’m going to replace/repaint are the seat backings/plastic parts, seatbelt & seatbelt components, door panels, carpet, all interior panels, and maybe the headliner (currently black).
Hell if any of you have some pics of interiors for ideas too that would be awesome.

I have an idea. Leave it gray or as close to original color scheme as possible. Anything else will probably look cool to you but an abortion to everyone else. This was the beginning of the end for many a thirdgen.

Appreciate the input really but like I said I'm not really a fan of the gray interior, I've had gray interiors in all of my cars so far and wanted something different/darker. It's in pretty bad condition anyways so it's going to have to be replaced. But hey that's the whole point right? What's the point of driving something that's not appealing to yourself?
What color is the exterior? Red and black will not look good for say a blue exterior. Most 3rd gens go with the single color interior so its hard to find photos of what you are looking for. If you go with 2 tone interior your seats need to be the same. I don't think all red seats would look good in a non red interior. The whole sore thumb thing and just my opinion. Below is a pic of a members car. I like this look. Good mix of both colors through out. You could duplicate something similar in red and black.

Oh yeah I definitely get what you mean, but that's exactly what I was thinking with two toning it thank you for the pic!
Edit: Forgot to mention that the exterior is currently black, I'm either going to keep it like that or repaint it to maybe a dark red/burgundy.

Yeah two-tone is definitely the way to go, I'm just a little stuck on which parts I should make black and which to make red. My unimaginative fish brain is struggling lol.
If you don't have black interior panels to replace your grey panels, then, personally, I'd stick with the grey panels, rather than painting them black. The dash and console will remain grey, charcoal and black, so that gives you a pallet of grey, charcoal and black to work with for your black car, and your idea for a red tone mixed into it will look very nice.
Charcoal carpet will look nice. It will look blackish, and it might play better with all of the other tones than black.
And don't underestimate the effect of colored stitching. Red stitching on black upholstery; black stitching on red upholstery, etc.
1987 GTAs had an option for a cloth/leather combo. What does/did yours have? What are you considering? Besides cloth and leather, vinyl upholstery kits are available that are almost as nice as leather and much less expensive. Two-tone may or may not be available in a readymade kit. A custom two-tone will cost a lot more.
Another upholstery color that would look great in a black car with that interior color pallet is white. White vinyl or leather seats with black inserts or red inserts. Red and/or black stitching. Nobody thinks of white anymore, but it can be stunning in a black car.
