best LT1 year

is there any difference in LT1's from year to year? I'm working under the assumtion that I'd be rebuilding the motor, possibly new custom pistons, so I'm really just asking about the block, crank and heads. While we're at it, would it also be safe to assume that LS1's are the same as well (same as above...ignore cam, etc)?

'95 is probably the best year, vented non-splined opti, biggest cam of the LT1's and also the best thing, OBDI instead of OBDII

i second that. 95

the best block would be from a vette, they have 4-bolt mains, f-body has 2 bolt mains

Vettes and f-bodies have aluminum heads

But the stock iron heads flow better than the stock aluminum heads.

only unported, and you're only talking about 5 cfm. not worth it.

so if I were transferring the whole system (engine, tranny, rear, wiring, computer, interior including gauges) would it be as big of a concern to run an (1996-up) OBDII? with the OBDII system I figure I'd have a better bet of communicating with the system...just my thought.

And as for the heads, you're saying that the stock iron heads flow better, but not much better...so I might as well get aluminum heads for the weight savings and carefully port them...right?

sorry I'm normally an Old Mopar guy, so my other favorites (thirdgen camaros) are somewhat newer to me.

verting OBD

I am about to start installing a 96 crate LT1 into an 89 TBI. I have a 97 OBDII from a 97 Z28, NO wiring harness yet. what recommendations do you recommend based on reading that OBDI's are better. Should I get OBDI?

OBDI is easier to tune. OBDI is easier(cheaper) to monitor. OBDI uses only 2 oxygen sensors while OBDII uses 4, but OBDII can be programmed to work off of 2.

The 96-97 wire harness is backward compatible to the 95 wiring harness, meaning that a 95(NOT 94) PCM(computer) will work on it.

Unless you plan on tuning or monitoring the sensors by yourself then probably wouldn't need a 95 PCM. However, an OBDI LT1 with a tune will yield about 10 more HP than a tuned OBDII LT1, while using 91+ octane.
