LT1 Swap/Power Steering ?

Hey guys, I was just reading the Project Snowball articles in GMHTP and am now curious. Did any of you run into issues with your power steering set up? Will I have to do anything more than running some new lines to/from the pump?

I just took my high pressure line to a hydraulic hose shop and had them cut it in half (I pulled out the spiral metal thing inside it - dont know what it was, but it works fine without it), and splice in the necessary amount of hose to make it the right length. Works great.

Sounds like the Impala hose is a better, more bolt-on approach, but this will work fine as well.

I have heard for the f-body LT1s, if you have the lines, you can just bend them.

I bought my pressure line from o'reilys for like $35. I got a pressure line for a 95 caprice ss and it worked with minor bending. I had to move that thing where the wire plugs into on the thirdgen and moved it to the opening for it on the caprice line. For the return line, i just used a few feet of ps hose that i picked up from the parts store.

I'm using the original PS cooler that came with the car, had some hoses and special high pressure couplings made up and it works like a charm.

That line should be the same as a Caprice p/s line. You may have to bend it some.

No. The 93-97 F-Body high pressure line is way too short because the 93-97 F-Body had rack and pinion steering. The 93-97 F-Body line is maybe a foot long and the '95 Caprice/Impala line is more like 3 feet long.

Re: LT1 Swap/Power Steering ?

ive noticed the power steering line i got from a roadmaster the line goes in on the back of the pump rather than an Fbody they go in on the side of the pump...maybe the line i got was from an older roadmaster..

Re: LT1 Swap/Power Steering ?

A nice way to go is to run AN lines & fittings. Use the tube nuts and tube sleeves to connect the lines. I may do that. Plus, it gives me an excuse to buy Summit's AN flaring tool.

Re: LT1 Swap/Power Steering ?

Went to my local hydraulic shop the other day and there gonna make me the length of line i need with the fittings on the end that use a compression style fitting so all i need is the ends, one going into the pump and one going into the box. They said $36

Re: LT1 Swap/Power Steering ?

Here's Powercraft P/N 91780 p/s line for an impalla.

Is this the correct routing? Doesn't the stock 4th gen route behind the acessories?

*edit* removed pictures *edit*

I guess it'd be out of the way enough (of the fans etc) if I zip tie it to the wonder bar?

Also, I assume everyone retains the thirdgen p/s cooling lines and the return hose goes from the box to the cooling hard lines, to rubber lines back to the resevior?

Re: LT1 Swap/Power Steering ?

Can anyone verify is this is even the correct hose? I've since added the serp belt and clamped on the radiator hoses. The only way I can get it to install is to route it THRU the serp belt. Surely that's not right? Even then, it would have to be bent just to clear the lower radiator hose. I know some people have said that they had to slightly bend the p/s hose to make it work while others have said the impalla one is a direct fit. What am I missing?

Hoses are the recommended 92 Corvette lower and 95 Camaro upper. The p/s hose feels stressed as tho it's in a bind (because it is) and not in it's 'natural' state.

Rather not start a new thread on something (p/s hoses) that has a billion threads already, but I guess I will if it means more exposure.

Re: LT1 Swap/Power Steering ?

Sorry to revive this old thread.

Judging from the previous pictures you don't reuse the cooler lines? (Judging from the top poster pics where he tapes it shut.

Will this cause any problems? If not then anyone know the size of the fitting? I would rather plug it up if not.

In the pic, it is taped up to keep crap from getting into the line because it hasnt been hooked up. if you cap off where the cooler goes (which is also the return line), how does the fluid get back to the resivor? you cant. you either bend the line to point it twoards the passenger side of the car or remove it and put a fitting to run a rubber hose directly from the box to the resivor. i bent my cooler line. used a caprice pressure line and caprice resivor.

Re: LT1 Swap/Power Steering ?

If you don't want to hassle with the PS line, thirdgen.org member Z28ricer sells a very nice braided LT1-swap PS line that drops right in.

Reviving an extremely old thread but I plan on dropping an LT1 in and I was wondering how much Z28ricer sells the lines for?

Re: LT1 Swap/Power Steering ?

Send him a PM:
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/member.php?u=5953

I don't know if he makes PS lines anymore. I don't remember what the price was. Somewhere around $100, maybe more, maybe less.
