Flywheel Questions
Ok guys, i have a dilemma.
I dropped my Lt1 off at my engine shop today to get the short block rebuilt and have the heads reworked. When they balance the crank, i know they have to have a flywheel attached to do this.
I have a 305/t-5 in my 91 right now, and i plan on using my t5 for at least a little while untill i can afford to swap in a t56. If i have them balance the crank with the 305 flywheel, will i be able to swap to a t56 later on without having to change flywheels and have the motor re balanced?
I know that the lt1/t56 has a pull typle clutch vs the push style of my current set up.
Would i be able to leave my current setup (flywheel, pressure plate, and clutch) in place in the bellhousing and just mount the t56 up to that? would that work?
I guess my main question is after having the engine balanced with the flywheel from my 305, will i have any problems swapping to a t56?
Sorry if these questions seem stupid, im really confused on this issue. Ive talked to a couple people at jegs and all they did was make things worse.
Thanks for any input.
Jake

Re: Flywheel Questions
Anybody?
Does the bolt pattern fro the t5 bellhousing match the t56?
If it does, i could use the old syle push clutch with my 305 flywheel correct?
I really need straigtened out here.
Thanks

Re: Flywheel Questions
Spohn.net has an adaptor plate that lets you bolt the t56 up to your old bellhousing and hydraulics http://www.spohn.net/?action=product&pid=1733
I don't know if anyone has used this yet but here it is, ready for trials

Re: Flywheel Questions
Wow thats cool. That deinatley answers one of my questions. Thanks i ll have to look into that.
If i wanted to use the t56 bellhousing, would i be able to keep my 305 flywheel? If i had to switch, would this throw my balance out?
Thanks again.

If they just put the flywheel on the crank like a bobweight, and don't modify the flywheel in the balancing process, a T56 flywheel won't upset your engine balance.

Re: Flywheel Questions
They would be moving the weight around on the flywheel to achieve the correct balance. iirc.
My new big question is, Say i run with the t5 untill it breaks or i get a t56, will i have to change the flywheel to swap the t56 in? Can you run the t56 with the 305 flywheel?
Im probably making this out to be a way bigger deal than it actually is. sorry if i am.

DO NOT let anybody do this to you. Factory engines are balanced to a specific spec, and so are flywheels; and they INTERCHANGE. The factory DOES NOT balance a crank to a flywheel, or vice-versa. They balance them to the spec and they work.
Have yours done the same way. If somebody tells you they can't, pick up your parts and take them to somebody else who will.
Yes a stock-balanced T-56 flywheel is the same balance as a stock-balanced 305.
I don't know about the adapter plate business, can't help you there. But in general, doing the entire T-56 swap, then yes you will need a T-56 flywheel, the T-5 one will not work. The "305" business doesn't have anything to do with it.

Re: Flywheel Questions
Wow that clears things up quite a bit. Maybe i just missunderstood. maybe five7kid was right when he said they use it just for a bob weight. I will have to talk to the shop and make sure thats what they do.
Thanks alot, that makes things much easier.
