My 82 got a mechanical inst. cluster with a 70MPH speedo. I recently got a hold of this GTA electronic dash. It has be refurbushed and set to zero.
I dont have a the connectors or harness for it......
I was hoping the 4th gen connector would be the same......but they are not

Here is the one from a 3rd gen Firebird (bottom)....I am looking for the connectors that go into the two slots

Re: 3rd gen electronic dash connector

It would be best if you also got the complete dash harness as well, which would probably involve you swapping out everything for the later model equipment (87+ headlight switch, heater controls) to make sure everything still worked, and you would also have to swap out the gauge bezel as well to an 85+

Shoot - I haven't needed to take my dash apart, otherwise I'd do it in a heartbeat!

I'll keep an eye out at the junkyard though...

Re: 3rd gen electronic dash connector

I'm just about to do this as well. My 85 has a cable speedo and since the lt1 swap I have a signal for the newer electric gauges. I bought the dash connectors off of a parts car to use as a reference. Got the 145mph speedo unit as well. I think it comes down to a matter of re-pinning the connectors that are already in the car.

Re: 3rd gen electronic dash connector

You will not need to find another connector. Pull your gauges out. Re-pin your connectors to match the pin-outs from what I posted above. My car only had 1 grey wire for the dash lights so I spliced into that and ran another down to the other connector. You will need to add the wire for the speedo gauge. My car had 2 pink w/black wires(12v power). Plug one into upper 12 and the other into lower 9.

I am quoting this from another thread.

Do I need this box along for the electronic instrument cluster to work ? My car was orginally mech speedo so it didnt have it.

or will the LS1 PCM and the rewiring of my stock connector do the trick ?

Re: 3rd gen electronic dash connector

You shouldn't need the buffer box unless you are running a later-model third-gen cruise off of it (like I am).

Re: 3rd gen electronic dash connector

I have a quick question that I haven't been able to find the answer to yet... I'm swapping an 87 cluster into my 85 Trans Am and getting the Dakota Digital Box to translate my T-56 VSS. The output wires from the digital box... would they go to Pin 14 and ground on the lower connector?? Unless I am reading that wrong... any help would be appreciated!!
