need pictures of truck intakes in thirdgens!

hey guys, i'm needing some help from you guys that may have done the lsx swap using a truck motor. specifically, if you used a truck intake manifold, i need some clearance shots. i just picked up a 3" cowl hood and am hoping that a truck manifold would fit under it with room to spare. the reason is that i'm going to try to pick up a new edelbrock pro flo xt intake manifold, which sits at 10.2", and the truck manifold supposedly sits at 9"...so if one can fit the truck intake under a 3" cowl, then hopefully i'll be able to fit the pro flo.

worst case scenario, i'll get the new motor dropped in and sit an old truck manifold on the motor, but that's still a few days off. any help is SERIOUSLY appreciated!

Re: need pictures of truck intakes in thirdgens!

I can fit a vic jr, nitrous plate, 950 quick fuel carb, and a 14x6 air cleaner under my 4" cowl. Does that help? but mine is that glasstek cowl which is like an outlaw style where the cowl gets tall really fast compared to the smaller ones.

don't know since i sold off the vic jr to run a different intake. I have a truck 5.3L in the garage and it is shorter than my combo was though if that helps.

yep, it does. i'll be laying the truck intake on the motor and taking some pictures with the hood on to see what i have for clearance.

Re: need pictures of truck intakes in thirdgens!

I'm probably one of the few around here running a truck intake. I have a 4" cowl and it doesn't touch the hood. I feel a 3" will fit fine. The intake doesn't cause the biggest problem. The Intake tube does because of how the cowl drops off toward the nose. Mine doesn't touch though..

awesome. it's hard to tell how it's going to work, because the tallest part on the proflo intake is right at the front of the motor...

1987earthquake - it would probably help a lot if you could stretch a couple of pieces of masking tape from fender to fender across the engine compartment, like I did in my "truck accessories" thread...

Might make it a lot easier to see/judge how it lines up...

Well, I was going to try to "make something work" in order to try to save a bit of coin, but my realistic side stepped in & reminded me that I usually have to take 4 or 5 swings at a project like that before I end up with something vaguely workable (& wind up spending a LOT more in time & materials anyway) - so instead I just spent the money on a pre-engineered solution. I bought part # K10168 to retain the truck spacing from the block so that I could keep the VVT.

(NOTE: I haven't gotten a P/S pump yet, so I don't yet know about any clearance issues with the frame rail - that's the only remaining concern I have.)

Hope this helps.

Re: need pictures of truck intakes in thirdgens!

I used the stock 1984 mounts with a 1" back adapter plate ... I am going to use a pancake compressor and mount it up on the passenger side...
