New IROC Boost
Wellthe IROC is finally under the knife. Some of you have seen the car as it has been with the stock LS1 and the STS turbo kit maybe even as far back as when Bruce at Hawks built it 4 or 5 years ago. I have owned it for almost 4. So in the quest of more power I bring you the new and improved. I have most everything either here or ordered for the new turbo build. Also will be picking up a 6.0 block. Going to keep the Iroc pretty calm (well 600hp calm) and taking my 408ci monster I had built awhile ago and build a thirdgen around the motor with either a Kenne bell or twin turbo for the track.
Also my buddy is doing a Turbo LS T56 swap into his grand national with a pro touring theme to go with it so stay tooned for the next month on our builds (doing them in the same garage).
So here is were I'm at right MEOW. I got a high mileage LQ4 block for my build tore it apart and apparently they didnt do oil changes to often cause it was just sludge everywere. So it was plan B and off to the machine shop to get cleaned it went. So far i have the following.
LQ4 Block
317 heads with Patriot valve springs
Custom Turbo cam from Slowhawk
JE Turbo pistons
Eagle H beam Rods
CTSV R Lifters
LS2 Timing Chain
LS6 Oil Pump
76MM Master Power Turbo.
**** Load of pipeing to weld up my new setup.
New 18" rims plus a set off 15" with some "special" tires
Currently waiting on my Eagle rods so i can get the rotating assembly ballanced and put the block back togther.
My Icky block torn down ready to go to the machine shop.
Me cleaning the **** out of the rockers. Ugh always change your oil or you stuff looks like this.
Whats this a... Boosty Spooly thing...

The van it came out of had 147k miles on it. Even with all that crud in the oil-exposed area, the cylinders still show some crosshatch. Incredible.

My LM7 looked like that on the outside. It took degreaser and a pressure washer to get it off. Insides looked ok, not the greatest though. When I swapped pans I peeked at the cyl walls and they still had some crosshatching left too
These engines seems to take a beating and live on

Getting closer...
This is what a LS-Juan tensioner pulley looks like... Dont try and push a motot and trans the 2 inchs needed to close the garage door. Then to just find out that it was just a box in the way of the sensor. FML.

Probably a dumb question, but whats that thing beside the fuel rail (above PS pump) it has a line going to it from the throttle body?

Has real update.
Passenger side header, turbo, and downpipe in. It went in rather easy. The driver side... eh prob not so easy. we will see though. The downpipe is 3.5". Now to figure how the hell the heater box is going to go in...

Re: New IROC Boost
Massaged the NON A/C box in so i will have heat/defroster which is good. trying to clean up a few things. The damn braided fuel lines for the fuel rails is kicking my ***. Need to make a steering shaft now as mine is to fat were the dampner is for the driver side header . Oh well looks like either some custom stuff or flaming river parts. Prob be doing the coilovers in the next few days so I can slam it.

Re: New IROC Boost
Got the driver side header in. Took some massageing with a hammer to the very rear primary which will probably have to be redone when the new steering shaft gets here as i think i'll have to "dimple" it way to much for it to be safe. But we will see. Welding the crossover tonight hopefully and maybe if all goes well will be able to fire this off. Still need help with the god damn braided fuel lines. i can't get them to not splay.

This car i swear is going to kill me. LOL. Here some updated pics. Still have to figure this damn oil return bung thats in the middle of my K member. Got to finish my crossover pipe but that will come after I get this PS pulley off which is being a pain. Oh the joys of performance.
Got rid of the lexus to day for this. Now, for some reason, white snake is rockin out in my backyard and theres a bunch of dudes with ******s and jean jackets around my house... weird...
Now i have itch to sell the Benz and get a Chevy Beretta Z26 Dale Sr. edition...

Looking good man! This is making me want to build a front mount!
What did you use for plug wires? Did you buy a kit and make your own? Or find a pre-made kit that works.
Ive been wanting to build my own set so I can relocate my coils...but Ive never done it. Any input?

Car runs! I did a Jig when it started with no probs. Heres a short vid of it running. Got a wrong fitting going to the turbo so gotta change that before any shake down. Thnaks to Matt (donkeypunch), my good bud Wop Josh, Ed at Va Speed, Shawn Ramey, LS1tech, Ebay (is da ****), and of course my wife Nicole who has put up with this the last 8 months. Hope to have the car out this weekend.

Nice! good work man! Its a great feeling when they fire up. Especially when it goes smoothly like that!
Cant wait to see what kind of numbers you make and how it runs.
So those wires are just an LT1 wire set? Or did you make them using an LT1 "build your own" kit?
If I can just get a set of LT1 wires, and hide the coils somewhere, Ide be a happy camper.

They were the LT1 build it yourself wires. One end comes already done. Its really way easier than it looks.

The car is a whole new beast. Running extra lean so no good video until I get my tuner to fix that. I think 600HP + is def achieavable with this setup.

Re: New IROC Boost
*update*
As much as I dont want to I'm dropping the motor out of the IROC to fix a few things, tuck some things, and just some normal cleanup. The fitting I had welded by Va Speed is in a bitch f a spot and I cross threaded the **** out of the fitting and after alot of finesse work it seems I just cant get it to thread right.
-So anybody who is familiar out there think i should just go with a tubular K-Member and be done with it. Or just take the pan and get a new bung welded a little farther up so it doesn interfere and leave stock K-Member in there.
Next need to figure out why my temp gauge doesnt work. Turn car on and I get nothing. Could the gauge be bad? I suck at wiring so any help would be great.
-With wiring I just got my wire relocation kit in and I'm little lost as to were to start. All i know is the battery goes to the trunk and the power wire goes to the Starter? and another hot wire from the Alternator to the battery?
-GOing to pull me hotside off and have everything powder coated. (any place better than any other?) I'va had stuff done a precision do they do good ceramic coating?
-Genral clean up, Going to try and clean the whole engine bay weld up some holes and then flat black the whole thing again.
-Any LSx guys know if you can powder coat an LS intake or should I just sand it and paint it myself?
-For those that have followed my build is there anything I should do or upgrade while its all out again?
-Final note i might be picked up another complete LS drivtrain with a 4l80e. so as much as I never wanted to the ROC might go auto with a stall and be done with it.
Thanks for any help guys.

Re: New IROC Boost
Got a pic of where the bung was welded? If its anywhere forward of the reservoir Id agree, terrible place. 3rd gens are very tight there stock
Did your gauge work before the swap? What sender are you using? Does the temp show up on a scantool from the PCM?
Id get a power dist block first. Mount all your hot wires off the starter lug and onto it. You want the biggest cable going directly from the batt to the starter, then a smaller one from the starter to the dist block. The dist block feeds everything and has the alt output ganged in
No suggestions on the hotside
Cleaning/tidying things up is always easier the second time because you remember exactly what parts bugged you
I wouldnt PC the intake. A local club member does it and say it looks good for a while then starts flaking off a few years later. Ive never heard any gripes about painting it though and should be cheaper
Tidying up the wiring, hoses and cables are all Id see changing. Thats all aesthetics, and wont change how it runs

Thanks for the response pocket. BTW love you build in all unique it is.

I'll get some pics of where it is but pretty much it sits in the middle of the stock k-member and makes it a PITA to get to.

As of a note the car was an LS1 b4 the swap and it did work fine. Yes the PCm shoes the temp.

I figured this would all be easier with motor out again.

Thanks for the advice. I'll just paint it then.

Id get a power dist block first. Mount all your hot wires off the starter lug and onto it. You want the biggest cable going directly from the batt to the starter, then a smaller one from the starter to the dist block. The dist block feeds everything and has the alt output ganged in
I figured this would all be easier with motor out again.
Thanks for the advice. I'll just paint it then.
Tidying up the wiring, hoses and cables are all Id see changing. Thats all aesthetics, and wont change how it runs
Thanks for the help man.

Re: New IROC Boost
Do a continuity test from your sender wire to C100 F5 (dk grn). If you have a good connection there, Id wager your gauge is faulty

Re: New IROC Boost
:UPDATE:
Changing some things up. Prob swaping heads. Hot parts are getting hot coated. Tubular K member. The wheels on my teal 92 Z28 are going while I gather the rest of the parts for my LS 408 motor thats going in it.
The rims
Where
taking apart
i scored this setup off craigslist for pretty much half price and its brand new. 82-92 Spohn K-Member and A-Arms.
Also Finally going to move the Battery to the trunk.
Got a set of these just need some seats to go with them.
Going to pull the motor from the bottom then fix and clean up even more stuff in the engine bay. Teal 92 Z28 is going to get the 408 LS motor with a 6 speed and the iroc is getting an auto so I know it'll go fast. Will have a build thread for that soon.

Re: New IROC Boost
I just want you to know that I freakin' LOVE your car! It is literally exactly how I want my car to be when I am "done" with it, except in convertible form of course. I really want to start piecing together a turbo setup next summer and start on it in the winter of 2011. I've got too much stuff going on at the moment to start buying parts right now, but you're really giving me motivation. I want the coil overs and the tubular a-arms to go with my k member too! Man, that's so awesome! And I've been talking about getting the SS hood too for a LONG time
