Is this a good deal?

Was wondering what you guys thing about this deal, its a local craigslist ad: Price is $350 obo.

LS1 gen IV chevy engine

LS6 block out of a 01 Camaro SS
-"Has one cracked piston for sure I don't know if anything else is wrong..."

LS1 Heads with stock springs, and valve covers. No lifters, rocker arms, or push rods.

Also comes with: Oil pan, pickup, windage tray, complete bottom end, harmonic balancer/damper, stock cam, timing chain, and exhaust manifolds

Would this be worth looking at? Anything in particular I should ask; block number, etc... Now I plan on swapping an LS1 into my Iroc down the road, but say for instance I buy a wrecked parts car, would I be able to sell this and get my money back?

Here some pics from the ad:

I don't know much about the LS motors but this seemed like a good deal when I came across it. Only thing that has me worried is, "Has one cracked piston for sure I don't know if anything else is wrong..."

Magnafluxing is for magnetic blocks correct? So if I get the block inspected how would they check it/ what would they do?

Re: Is this a good deal?

the oil pan itself usually goes for about $200-300, mani's between $50-100, so i'd do it. if the block's good, you've got one heck of a deal. if not, you could sell off some stuff to make back a few bucks

Re: Is this a good deal?

Is all of it out of a camaro, or LS "style" truck heads?? there is a difference. Also, LS6, didn't know that any camaro's came with LS6's, they should all be LS1's.

Re: Is this a good deal?

01-02 Fbodys sometimes came with the LS6 block. Some oil passages were upgraded and the casting finish changed. Absolutely zero extra power was made from the combo. Guys with the LS6 block use it as a selling feature

Buy the engine, in a worst case with a bad block, you can still sell the crank and rods. Mock-up blocks are always useful

code for, the piston destroyed the bore and the block is junk unless you sleave it, but I'm covering my **** by telling you something may be wrong even though I wouldn't be selling it this cheap if it was an easy fix.

Re: Is this a good deal?

It sounds like a good deal, potentially a great one. The block alone is worth more than they're asking if it's not damaged. The accessories are worth well beyond what they're asking. Individual parts are also worth plenty of money.

But... if it's got a broken piston, chances are good that there's other carnage as well... which means that you may wind up with a LOT of unusable stuff that you can't resell, and that is of no use to you, so I'd definitely look it over in person and decide if the benefits outweigh the drawbacks

With all the stuff it's missing, it'll nickel & dime you getting it into a running combo.

That's after fixing whatever's actually wrong with it, if it can be fixed.

If nothing else, it's a mock-up for your engine mounts and wiring harness.

I saw this in the Pensacola section of craigslist, I thought about picking it up but I don't foresee me having enough time to build that back together

Re: Is this a good deal?

Yeah I think I'll at least take a drive down there. I'm in no hurry to start a motor swap but I figured this was worth looking into. Any advice on what to look for when examining the block and heads besides: shavings, gouges, etc... Casting numbers?

Standard serviceability inspections. It will have to be completely disassembled to do that, and preferably cleaned.

Casting # would be good information. The LS6 blocks can be honed more than the earlier LS1 blocks.

Re: Is this a good deal?

yeah this could be a good deal...but then again..broken piston usually that there is more damage than meets the eye..even if the piston is broken and the cylinder is in good shape, the crank could be out of round..just something to think about before you be...also magnaflux is for cast iron blocks "yes"..and for aluminum blocks they pressurize the block to check for cracks..hopes this helps

Re: Is this a good deal?

Well I appreciate everybody's opinions and help. The guy has either sold it, or realized he could get more money out of it cause; he hasn't gotten back to me since yesterday, and he deleted all of his ads off craigslist . O well, Ive already learned a bunch of useful things over the last two days so it's already been worth it . I could use some more help though...

Ive been watching the local craigslist ads for the last three months religiously and I've yet to see any wrecked LS cars. Any hints or tips on where to find some wreck/parts cars? I'll probably start trying some junkyards, but knowing the ones around here they'll want something outrageous.

Re: Is this a good deal?

Right now I have a buddy that has this

Complete drop out from a 2002 Trans Am WS6. It has 43k miles and is completely unmolested/modded.

The engine and trans is still in the car and can be ran. It will come complete with all accessories(alternator, water pump, power steering, ac compressor, all sensors, starter, exhaust manifolds). With that said, it means intake to oil pan and waterpump to transmission tailshaft. The wiring and PCM is also included

What you are buying is the most complete LS1 drop setup you can buy.

Details:
2002 LS1 w/ T56 Transmission
LS6 Intake
43k Miles
Complete drop out

$4695 and can be shipped to a business via ground freight.

Re: Is this a good deal?

I'd prefer something local because it'd be less of a hassle, and shipping charges alone would cost me a pretty penny even with my employee discount. Thanks though.

Mine were ~$425 from Florida and South Carolina to Colorado for the first two. The third I drove all day each way to pick up myself.
