Re: LS1/4L60E Swap into my 87 Z28
Alright, well scratched that and went with a top mount battery in the stock location.
Im running the lead from the battery to the starter, and then a wire from the starter to the alternator.
I thought about wiring up the power lines coming out of the driverside bulkhead right to the battery terminal, since the stud on the starter is a bit short to handle another connector.
As for that bulkhead connector, I cut out pretty much all of the wires coming out of that bulkhead.
I have a question, what are all these connectors that are hanging around where the old ECM was? I dont remember disconnecting them from the old computer?
Then there is a connector that comes up throught the hole where the old harness comes through. Its two or three wire, and I cant figure out where it goes?
A guy on my local site brought up this hose
Could I just hook up the steam tube unit there? Its a bit short, so I will cut the waterpump side and possibly attach the length of hose from a V6 Camaro.

upper
I think im gunna cut off that stupid hose holder there. Its getting in the way.
Lower. Im gunna get some of that protectant sheilding that should stop the idler arm bracket from wearing a hole in the side of the hose.

I hacked my hose holder off, cause it also got in the way of my intake.

I need a little help, I need to figure out what these 3 connectors are on the passanger side, under the dash. I thought maybe they went to guages, but I cant remember pulling them off the old ECM?
I can take a pic, but they are three large connectors under the dash on the pass. side.
I also need a little help with trying to figure out why my fog lights no longer work? I assume that the connector coming out of the top of the wire loom behind the radiator has somethng to do with that? I dont know where it plugged into though, I dont see it in any part of the old harness.
In the mean time...more pics. Harness has 12v power and 12v switched power now.
I need to wire up the IP now, and put in the Autometer speedo.

Are your headlights in the car? If not that MAY be the reason the fogs dont work. I am not a big Camaro guy but on my 88 or 91 GTA the fog lights grounded through the high beam filiment in the headlight, the Camaro may be similar. If you have a wiring diagram it may help determine if that is the problem, unless you have put the headlights back in.

Hrm, ok cool. I was gunna tap into them so I can make wiring the IP a lot easier.
As for the fogs, they headlights are in and work, thats how we figured out that the fogs dont work.

All things equal, maybe you removed a ground connector off the body when you painted the engine bay? Its hard for me to know since I dont know what you did and I dont have the schematics for your car.

Ignition coils aren't firing, they show power and ground. Injectors are firing fuel. Crank sensor shows rpm on scantool.
Whats not firing the coils? I think its a bad pcm.

Winter is gone, April is here, so I have some questions. What is everyone using for trans dipsticks? I dont want to use the factory LS1 unit, so any other ideas? Lokar firewall one wont work, and the trans mount one might not work either.

What's wrong with using the factory ls1 piece?

I just dont like the look of it popping out of the back and coming over the top of the engine. Ive thought about buying one, and trimming it back so it doesnt poke out as much.

Re: LS1/4L60E Swap into my 87 Z28
Pocket, I had nothing but problems. It wouldn't fit at all. I have something in there now that sort of works, but I think I might go with a Lokar transmount unit and just deal with the tight space back there.
Also, another question. I want to buy chassis mount torque arm, but it seems only Spohn makes one for the swap, and that it uses their flat cross member. I have the Hawks unit in there now, and dont want to give up space. Is there ANYTHING else out there?

Yikes, that thing looks flimsy with no bracing, and is more expensive than the Sphon unit.
Is the Sphon crossmember that bad for exhaust routing?

Looks like BlueZee28 got around his Spohn trany crossmember with no problem. See his pics on page two of this thread

I wouldn't say without any problems, the shop that made my exhaust said it was one of the most complex systems theyve ever made. It looks good and everything though, only thing I don't like is it scrapes on speed bumps since my car is lowered.

Well, bit the bullet and ordered the xmember and torque arm.
Now I need to find a 4th gen 4L60E dipstick, and off to the exhaust shop I go.

Re: LS1/4L60E Swap into my 87 Z28
wow, it has been a while. I had to put the swap on hold for a while. I had installed the cross member and everything else but looking at the pictures from above, it looks like I ordered the wrong one. I think I might have the crossmember designed for the standard 3rd gen and not one that has an ls1 swap.
where the above picture shows a notch, the one I have is sold across. The collector points directly at where it connects to the crossmember.

Time to start fabricating. I ended up having to cut off a few inches off the end of my collectors, trim down a few brackets, and make lots of trial and error trips to get the exhaust around the transmission.

Re: LS1/4L60E Swap into my 87 Z28
So I was looking at their site, and it seems that there is a different crossmemeber for T56 and 4L60E. The one I have is for the 4L60E while Blue's is clearly for the T56. I wonder if the T56 would work? That looks a lot better than the one on my car.
Worst case, I go with the original crossmember I had and lose the chassis mount torque arm.

Someone else on here might be able to correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure that the T56 crossmember won't work with a 4L60. I'm pretty sure that the transmission mount is farther back with the T56. If I were you, I'd start working on fabricating up a crossmember.

Re: LS1/4L60E Swap into my 87 Z28
I am in the midst of converting my car from TPI to an LS based motor, specifically a 2003 5.3 chevy engine coupled to a 4L60E transmission. I have most of my "ducks in a row" but as for fuel and exhaust, well that is my gray area. I do feel a little uncomfortable making my own fuel line(s).
Could you tell me how you ended up doing yours? If at all possible could you take a picture of it under the car because all I can seem to find is pictures of the an line by the engine bay, and as they say a picture is worth a thousand words (but only if it is the picture you are looking for). .
