How does VATS work on an LT1 ECM?
I am just wondering what exactly it does. I got my LT1 started but it will only run for 2-3 seconds before shutting off, and I want to see if that is the LT1 VATS.
I've heard that VATS will only allow the motor to run for a short period, but I also heard that it won't allow the engine to start at all, which is correct? How does VATS kill the motor, through killing the injectors, the fuel pump, or killing spark?
Thanks

That is all information on the VATS through the key. I am talking about the VATS that is programmed inside of the ECM. I have been told these are two separate systems. My camaro is an 88, and does not have VATS in the ignition.

The PCM is looking for the fuel enable signal from the body control module. This would normally be the coded key that gives the correct resistance for the BCM to tell the computer to enable the fuel pump. Without this signal, the PCM will prime the pump, which is why it starts, but it won't keep the pump running. You will need to have the VATS programmed out of the computer. Unless the you know the exact resistance value for the key programmed for that BCM and VIN, you won't be able to bypass it.

I hear the pump prime for the 3 seconds before starting, but I also hear it turn on once the engine is started, would this mean that VATS is allready disabled?

maybe. the only way to tell if the computer is supplying the fuel signal is to tap into the dark green/white wire on the fuel pump relay with a volt meter and watch the voltage after you start the car. It will prime for a few seconds when you turn the ignition on and then you should have a full ignition power once the car starts. The pump will still prime while your cranking but if your pump doesn't have a constant 12V for after you start the engine, you have VATS enabled.

I have the same problem with the engine only running a few seconds so i tried jumping the relay for the fuel pump to see if the engine would stay running and it did not does the vats shut anything else off?

The PCM also disables the ignition to prevent thieves from bypassing the fp relay. Otherwise, thieves could steal your brand new camaro with a paperclip. You guys need to have vats tuned out of the PCM. Stop trying to find a workaround an just spend the money. It's well worth it to not have to worry about it down the road.

Ihave never heard of a dealership doing that. Even if you could find one that knew how, there is way too much liability. You will either have to find a local speed shop that can tune lt1's, send it out to a shop, or buy the cables and software and do it yourself.
