Gas tank/pump for LSX swap

I'm back working on my swap after a couple months of stagnate progress and I just removed my gas tank so now my car is pretty much a shell with interior carpet. Anyways, looking to start buying more components and I want to know which gas tank/pump would be a good fit with my already purchased 6.0. Plastic tank from a 4th gen? or aftermarket 3rd gen replacement? What about the pump? Also i'm looking to run new lines as well any advise with that?

basically stock 6.0 config and looking to purchase ls6 intake.

Any advise would greatly be appreciated!

Re: Gas tank/pump for LSX swap

Is this on your '88 Iroc? Was it originally fuel injected or carb'ed? Is the fuel tank you removed unusable? I know there are some advantages to using the 4th gen tank, but I prefered sticking with my original tank. My car was originally fuel injected, So I didn't have to do anything to my fuel lines.

Here is my fuel pump swap. I went with the Walbro 255 and the Racetronix harness.

Re: Gas tank/pump for LSX swap

yes this is on the IROC and yes it was orginally fuel injected. I'm not sure the condition of the tank right now. i know its been sitting for about 5 years with 1/4 tank of gas in it. After I took it out last night I haven't fooled with it anymore just kinda dropped it and left.

So I can use the same fuel lines (they should be good I'm figuring)
tank (if its good) I will be able to use, correct?
All I should have to do is just swap fuel pump right?

thanks for the advice

There is a ls1 sticky it explains everything. It's real easy. The hardest part of the swap is time and money. Lol.

Yes, same fuel lines. Reuse the tank if you can get it cleaned-up. And yes, just swap the fuel pump. You might want to flush the lines and definitely put a new fuel filter on it since it sat for so long. If the tank is in good shape, just get all of the gas out of it and clean it out with soap and water. Also, make sure there are no cracks around the filler neck.

Re: Gas tank/pump for LSX swap

Oh yeah, you have a few options for fuel pressure regulators. Hawks makes a nice set-up that connects to the two lines up from using a nice adjustable aftermarket regulator, but it's expensive, or you can use the '97 corvette fuel rail with the regulator built in (hard to find) or you can use the Corvette fuel filter with the regulator built in (what most people use). I hope that helps.

I thought I had a picture of my Vette filter install, but can't locate it.

It isn't that complicated. Where the factory 3rd gen had the supply and return lines going up to the engine compartment, with the Vette filter you simply cut off the return at the filter - supply into the filter from the tank, outlet from the filter continues on to the engine compartment, return is on the same end of the filter as the inlet so just hook the return line up to it.

The Vette filter uses those quick release fittings, so you'll have to modify your fuel lines for them. Since my car started off as factory carb, it didn't have a filter under the car, so I was able to custom cut and install fittings without issues. If you're starting with an EFI car, you'll have to cut off the factory filter fittings, but I would imagine you won't have problems with length or routing of the lines in the process.

Re: Gas tank/pump for LSX swap

well bad news for me. The filler neck is loose where it meets the tank and it has a leak there. Do I go with a new tank or is there some kind of compound that will fill it without eroding?

Well I believe JB weld works fairly well, but if I had a 4th gen plastic tank I would be putting that in.

I will be installing my fuel lines and filter/regulator in the next week so I'll try to picture it better, but I don't see how it could get any simpler

Midway down the page BlueZee28 pictured it fairly well:

Re: Gas tank/pump for LSX swap

Yeah, I was going to suggest checking out BlueZee28's thread as well. I used JB Weld to fix the crack on my tank, but I got conflicting information as to whether it would work or not. My crack was real small though, so I'm not too worried about it. I'm not sure if maybe you could braze the crack shut or something. I would make sure the tank is empty and clean before you try that though.

JB Weld is fine for gasoline resistance. You need to thoroughly clean the surfaces first, and there has to be enough material around to support it.

I have an '82 tank in great shape that you can have if you figure out a way to get it.
