Carbed LS1?

Anybody done a carbed LS1 to their third gen? If so, was it easier to go that route than all the wiring, fuel tank/pump and so forth?

Re: Carbed LS1?

There's many folks at www.horsepowerjunkies.com (a local NC board) that have done it - and many threads about it. I've also rerad many threads at www.LS1tech.com.

Re: Carbed LS1?

I've done both. And honestly, it's about the same cost. Basically you have hardcore EFI guys on one side and hardcore Carb guys on the other each just bad mouthing each other. Best bet, just do what you want and are comfortable with.

Re: Carbed LS1?

I didn't know ther was a controversy surrounding the subject.. I'm still undecided about what I'm going to do with my engine and had looked around the forums.. I've read wher the LS swap is a better route than the LT swap but to expect to spend 10 grand.. Came accross the carb LS route n didn't know if it was cheaper. Is milage the same with carbed version?

Re: Carbed LS1?

Well, whatever I do I'm putting the 6 speed in (already have the 5 speed) and didn't know if doing the LS version was worth it compared to a cammed up 1 piece 350 something similar to maybe the ZZ4... Already carbed.

Re: Carbed LS1?

everyone that has done the swap is extremely happy with it. I did an Iron block LQ9 swap in to my car. I got it complete with wiring for $650 add another ~$250 for F-body accessories and intake. Really, the cost is as big or elaborate as you want to go with it. It can be done cheaper. I opted for tubular k-member, a-arms and such which added money to my swap. i could have gotten away about $1000 cheaper without that stuff. You have to know wiring or get someone like pocket on these boards to do your harness for you, you have to update your cooling system and fuel system. There's more, but it depends on how you want to go about it. I've seen guys pull it off costing them $1000 in the end because they bought the entire car and parted out what they weren't going to use.

Your best bet is to read the stickies on the top of this forum. It will tell you about everything you need to know.

Where did you find your 6.0? Did you rebuild it?

I've done around 6 or 7 of them now, not a big deal to do, msd6010 box or 6012 box and whatever intake you want along with a 750dp or larger carb.

I got mine from a local yard. It was still in the truck when I got there. It only had 38k miles on it so I didn't bother rebuilding it. The second one i got had 126k on it supposedly and was sitting in their warehouse. That's the one I've started building for boost when funds permit it.

There's one opinion on it. I feel the same as five7 on this one.

Re: Carbed LS1?

If you are keeping the engine close to stock I think its just as easy to leave it fuel injected. If you are building a highly modified engine I think its easire to carb it. That way you don't need to spend a bunch of money getting it retuned after each mod...it can be done just get expensive. You really can't go wrong either way...I like these engines carbed or injected.

spohn mounts, and a set of solid motor side mounts that i made using the 98-02 rubber mounts as a template.

the base plate of my carb is above the hood line. even wthout the 2" super sucker spacer it's still above the hood line. i would budget for a cowl hood if you're planning to run a vic jr intake. i can't speak for the performer rpm though.

Re: Carbed LS1?

I like carb for the old school look, sound and throttle response.I like injected for the ease of startup and fuel economy if any lol.I went injected just because my motor came complete and I was already fuel injected hsr.I cant speak about ease of installation between the two but I dont see any real major differences other than a few extra wires to be sliced in.Still need to do fuel fittings/lines etc..either at the tank or under the hood either way.Still need to figureout how you want your exhaust to run.Fitment is an issue with some carbs and the hood. The carb msd box Ive heard arent the greatest preloaded tunes and should be fine tuned regardless imo.So costs could be the same..give or take a lil on options during the buidl ie..cam..carb/intake/heads etc.

Carbs are more intimidating to see though compared to an lsx intake lol.Pick your poison and run with it.Both make good power in its own way. Both have its own disadvantages to eachother so I wont say one is better than the other in regards to performance.Carbs are still around in racing for a reason.

I was wondering has anyone tried a FAST efi system on an LSx?

Re: Carbed LS1?

Why use that fast efi if you have a complete ls1 with harness and ecu.Ive heard alot of guys dont like the tune from the fast efi and still needed a dyno tune to be 100%.

I will be using the stock engine mounts with adapter plates and I hope i can still use the stock hood

Re: Carbed LS1?

I doubt even the performer intake on a carbed ls motor would fit under a stock hood, and trying to shove an air filter on top might be tough. Best case would be to keep it efi if hood clearance is an issue.

That is kind of the opposite of going fuel injection. You can get get an engine WITH the factory fuel injection for less than buying an aftermarket setup. Sort of defeats the purpose. FAST EZ EFI was geared towards the "old school" crowd. Someone who has a carb engine already and wants to get get into FI without having to know all the much about it do it.
